My boat died on Friday and I'm too mechanically incompetent to figure it out on my own. I was going to take to Spellman's in Oshkosh but they have a 3 week waiting list and I'd like to get back on the water sooner than that. I have a 1968 18hp Evinrude.

I live in Menasha. Any suggestions for a reliable mechanic???

Everybody is backed up bad ..all across the country right now. It is the busiest time of year. Hopefully you don't need parts!
I hate to tell you this but with a 38 year old motor, you might want to think about a plan "B"...like picking up something newer. With a 1968 motor, you are dealing with "Antique" parts (seriously... that is what they are called), and the price will reflect the name.

Most top shops will not work on outboards older than 25 years. With labor rates what they are, and then add the insult of ridiculous priced antique parts.....It just results in a bad public relations situation all around.

Good luck... hopefully it will only be something dirty that needs cleaning to get it to work.

If you do not find someone closer and still need work on your motor........ I suggest that you check out REDZ Marine & Small Engine Repair. A good dependable mechanic that has a specialty for working on older smaller motors like yours. REDZ is located at 1535 Douglas Ave in Racine. They can be reached at 262-636-9750. Scott Kinderman, the owner, specializes in all small engine repair on all major brands of motors.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't think it's too serious, I took it out on Sunday and it fired but died within 20 seconds.

Risor I think the service you mentioned is called AJ's Mobile Marine. I picked up their business card this morning and will check it out.

Viking, I had this shop do some work for me this spring and was happy with the quality of service and working with the owner. It is a small repair shop north of Kaukauna and seems to do a lot of work with the smaller rigs.

Might be worth a phone call.

Happy fishing to all

Viking,

You may want to give Doug a call at Valley Marine right there in Menasha. He has worked with OMC motors for years including refurbishing ones a lot older than yours. That would be my 1st choice..

Thanks MMD. I've heard mixed reports about Valley Marine so I was a bit hesitant to go there but I also heard from another person that they were good with old Evinrudes so I decided to give them a shot. They were very friendly and helpful on the phone so I brought it in this morning. Hopefully I'll have it back it running condition by the end of next week.

I'll second Sportsman Marine in New London. Very quick turn around for me last summer and reasonalbe.

I hope to not need them too much but it's good to know they are there.

Good Luck!

I've had a few days to run the boat and the engine is running great. I am very satisfied with the service at Valley Marine.

Thanks again everyone for your input
