Member Posts: 1406 | You would think that this information would be great in helping to develop a single launch fee for the system? Would you pay 50.00 or $100.00 to launch anywhere? If not How much would it be worth to you? Good Luck Tyee Lake Winnebago System anglers create economic impact and jobs OSHKOSH, Wis.—Initial results are in from a mail survey that went out to approximately 2,000 anglers that fish in the Lake Winnebago System. Conservative estimates from the economic impact model indicate that recreational and tournament angling in the Lake Winnebago System generates $147.5 million in direct spending in the area. This spending then ripples through the local economy to generate an additional $73.9 million for a total of $221.4 million dollars created by angling opportunities in the Lake Winnebago System. This figure represents additional money coming into the 5-County region (Winnebago, Outagamie, Fond du Lac, Calumet and Waushara) from the outside. This money coming into the area both directly and indirectly creates 4,300 jobs in the region. The survey, coordinated by UW-Extension, UW-Green Bay, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Madison and Department of Natural Resources, evaluated the economic impact of the current recreational and tournament fishing that occurs in the Lake Winnebago System. “The good thing about these data is that they are generated locally from actual numbers reported by anglers – not extrapolated from statewide or national figures,” said Catherine Neiswender, UW-Extension Winnebago County. “We can be quite confident that these numbers do a good job of reflecting the economic contribution of angling to our local economy. Dr. John Stoll, Professor of Economics at UW Green Bay, who conducted the survey and its preliminary analysis, said that the multiplier effect is about 1.5. “For every dollar spent in the area, another $0.50 is generated in the local economy.” Tournament, out-of-state and local anglers make an estimated 1.1 million trips to the region each year. People coming from out-of-state make 98,000 trips and people living in the area make 451,000 trips per year to the Lake Winnebago System. Each year an estimated 170,000 people come to the Lake Winnebago System to fish. When anglers come here to fish, they spend their money as well. Out-of-state anglers reported that they spend roughly $96 million, primarily on lodging, meals and groceries. Local anglers spend approximately $67 million on boat expenses such as fuel or launch fees, and licenses and tackle. The survey was sent to a randomized sample of recreational and tournament anglers that fish on the Lake Winnebago System, including anglers that live outside of the region and outside of the state of Wisconsin. The survey collected data about demographics, activities, spending patterns and perceptions of anglers that fish in the area. “We had an excellent response rate to our survey, 60%”, says Catherine Neiswender, UW-Extension. “When all of the data is analyzed we’ll have a detailed report of spending amounts and activities for all 4 types of anglers (tournament, in-state, out-of-state, and local). These data will be useful to people making local policy and spending decisions that impact the Winnebago System, and to marketing, tourism and local economic development interests in the area.” “What the results show us is that the Lake Winnebago System and its fishery is an important resource to maintain and protect for the benefit of the entire community,” said Kendall Kamke, DNR Biologist. The survey project was co-sponsored and supported by several fishing and conservation clubs in the area, fishing-related businesses, and planning and economic development organizations.
