| hi all, i apologize for "trespassing" over here from my usual haunt at MuskieFirst, but i figured i'd share my good fortune with you. fishing muskies on Leech Lake last week, i stumbled into this 31" walleye. hit a big Funky Chicken spinnerbait on a boulder-strewn point in about 6 fow. "fish! fish!! oh, nevermind, i think it's a walleye. hold on...get the net!" lol. a couple pics and a quick measure on the Dunwright bump board and off she swam again. -m Attachments ---------------- 06-07-26 Leech Walleye 31.jpg (41KB - 131 downloads) | |||

Member Posts: 3899 | Nice one! On a spinner bait, too! Caught a couple on Cass a few years ago on an Undertaker. 29 and 27. And last couple years while trolling for muskies, I caught a couple eyes on the Fox River on big crankbaits.

I have seen girl scouts and brownies holding nice walleyes and they didn't have to wear a protective glove!!!! Just kidding - again congrats. Happy fishing to all

| lol. that shows the extent of my walleye knowledge. we sat there looking at it in the net debating how you're supposed to hold a walleye and wondering if they have sharp gill rakers or not... | |||

Member Posts: 51 | Is that considered a BIG walleye or something? Last year on the Goon, I got a 28 and a 27, just wondering if those are big Walleyes? Slamr

Location: Midland, MI 48642 | Nice fish Lambeau, very nice. Now I am betting your hooked since you found out how easy walleye are to catch right? I can see it now, all those Musky baits for sale and replaced with smaller baits... Had to kid you. Have a nice day and catch more walleye. Skeeter

| serious question from a walleye-impaired kind of guy. is there a correlation to bait size in catching walleyes? match-the-hatch, etc. etc.? this is the subject of much disagreement when it comes to muskies. are you as likely at any time to catch a big walleye on a jig/minnow as you are on a 6" crankbait or spinnerbait? or is it pretty dependant on matching what they're feeding on at the time? i was getting follows from schools of 6" perch, so i assume that's what that walleye was up there feeding on... | |||

Member Posts: 82 | simple answer = yes and no harder answer = don't really know I would guess that fish would eat 6" perch, but it looks pretty bright for that fish to be feeding on anything that shallow. But fish do eat when they can. My experience has been more for numbers of fish, I don't live on a trophy type water. So I usually am using lures that you would consider ultra-light (no. 5 and 7 raps, 1/4 oz jigs with 3 inch minnows....etc..) but do catch an occasional big fish on those. saugers2

it looks pretty bright for that fish to be feeding on anything that shallow. But fish do eat when they can. Leech Lake, Walker Bay, Templar Point...extremely deep water nearby. it had been overcast/misty all morning. the clouds moved off and the sun came out literally 30 seconds before hooking that fish.

Member Posts: 3899 | I think the size of the prey, and your bait may have a correlation, even with walleyes. I do think that big fish school together, and I also think you are right, that those fish are lunching on 6" Perch. We had several 20" fish on Green Bay a few weeks ago puke up 6-8" perch in the live well. Also, it used to be said that eyes are sensitve to the light, and stay deep when it calm and clear. I caught fish very high in the water column on calm, clear days. The biggest fish I caught at the FLW on Green Bay a few weeks ago was very high, maybe in the upper 5', in 25 feet of water.

Member Posts: 51 | I think I've finally figured it out: muskie fisherman are actually going after trophy WALLEYES, and walleye fisherman know that all you need is a tiny little minnow to catch a big MUSKIE. Anyone know what a Lindy Rig is? Cause I'm lost on the idea.... (Below is the description, as told to Mr. Worrall of the fish pictured here) I recently received an email from Ted Takasaki, President of Lindy Tackle. A customer had contacted him with a story and pictures of a BIG muskie caught while walleye fishing in Minaki, Ontario. The big fish hit a Lindy Rig Spinner Snell, and the angler finessed her into the boat. Here's an excerpt form the email Lindy received with the pictures and story. " I wanted to applaud you for the strength and durability of your Lindy Rig Spinner snells. Recently on a trip to Minaki, Ontario I was pleased with the success the spinners were affording us for walleyes. What I was surprised about was the strength and durability it had in helping me land the fish of my life time. While walleye fishing I hooked, caught and released a nearly 58 inch (29 inch girth) Muskie on a Lindy Rig. I was amazed that the line did not break under the weight and pressure of this enormous fish. " ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The fish was reported caught in late June, and was released. I know many of you fish Minaki, and wanted to let you know this big girl and undoubtedly her sisters are still out there on the prowl.
