Member Posts: 59 Location: Appleton, WI | Was out today on north end of the lake. Straight out from Neenah pool in 18 FOW. Caught one 17" on a #7 glass perch shad rap 100' back. Trolled from noon till 4pm. Lake was calm as glass and sunny and hot. Tried mainly shad raps in all colors and also tried crawler harnesess. Tried all different depths with no takers on crawlers. There had to be a billion minnows on the surface. Hundreds of large schools of 2-4" minnows rippleing the surface of the water. I can see why the bite is so tough. Not many guys out there trolling. Waiting now for cooler weather.

We pounded the reefs today and didn't do very well either. The extremely calm water today also had a lot to do with the poor bite. That's why it's called fishing.

Join us this Saturday at 1:00 pm at Val's Bait and Tackle in Stockbridge for the 2nd annual Customer Appreciation Day. We will have pop, food, and door prizes all afternoon. We will also have a 50/50 raffle and all proceeds will go to a good charity that has yet to be determined. We will have Kendall Kemke there at 1:30 in the afternoon doing his State of The Lake Report, and it is an awesome presentation to see and to learn from. There will be several vendors there, displaying there products and offering great deals as well. Some vendors include, Eagle Claw, Valley Marine Mart, Winnebago Fishing, and Grandma's breading. We will close up the day at 5:00 pm, and then we can all meet at Bobber's Bar just a half mile north of Val's for some relaxing, BSing, and a few drinks. If you cannot attend the Customer Appreciation Day, please stop out to Bobber's to join us there. The bar is simply awesome, and the owners always welcome you with a smile, oh and the drinks and beer are always good as well. I hope to see you at one of these two places on August 19th, 2006. I have spent the last few days on the east shore looking and searching for some new spots. On Wednesday we were out from 6 AM until 9 AM and found a few spots that have good potential. We would have stayed and tried to fish them, but those tiny white gnats were out in full force, and I was sick of dealing with them, so we left and called it a day. Tuesday night I did go back to one of my honey holes on the west shore and jigged the reefs and we ended up with 11 walleyes from 13 to 19.5 inches. I also had a big one that I would guess 27+ snap me off at the boat. I have now changed all lines on my jigging sticks to 8 pound line instead of 6 pound. This is the 2nd big fish I lost this year while jigging, and no longer going to accept it, so I moved up a few pounds. I have always used 6 pound, but the fish are so fat and healthy that I now made the move to a little heavier line. We are still using jigs and either crawlers or leeches. This is the first time in a lot of years that I can remember doing so well in August. It is great to see overall. Thursday morning I am leaving here at 5AM to once again hit the east shore in hope of learning more territory and hopefully doing some fishing if the bugs cooperate. I will have my radio on, so gimme a holler on 68 if you need me, or if you want to BS a little. Friday I just might go the Bay of GB and try and get that trophy, not sure yet, but I m thinking about trying it again. If you never have been to the Bay you need to go there at least once. You just do not catch those small walleyes. We seem to catch fish from 18+ inches, and it is awesome to see this. We are so lucky to have such a good fishery in our own backyard. Perch continue to be the hot topic right now on Bago, and the people that are chasing them are doing well. You need to find a few things to be successful for them though. One is if you can find a snail bed, you will find perch. They are just full of snails when we clean them. I bet if you rattle them hard enough they would sound like a crankbait. secondly, you need to really keep your bait close to the bottom. I have found that by deadsticking the top of the reefs, we have done well with just a small piece of crawler. Lots of guys are using hellgrammites, but they are so pricy, and the smallies love them too. I prefer crawlers for them, and this way I save some coin as well. The trolling bite has really slowed down, but this is pretty normal for this time of year. The trolling will pick up in early September so give it some time. Then you will want to switch to either all harnesses or even to #7 Shad Raps. The fish will now start to get into their late summer , early fall feeding frenzy, looking to bulk up for the winter. I suggest harnesses at 1.0 MPH, and about 50 feet back. I suggest #7 Shad Raps or Wally Divers at 75-100 feet back. Best colors seem to be Red Beads for harnesses along with a silver or gold hammered blade. I like to use bigger blades this type of year like 5,6, or even 7. We will mix up our blades by using hatchet blades as well. Walleyes are hitting on the reefs. We have tried both leeches and crawlers, and the last few days the leeches have out produced the crawlers big time. It is hard to find nice sized leeches right now, but if you can get some bigger ones, I suggest using them, and dragging them along the sides of the reefs. We were out on Tuesday night from 5 pm until dark and had 11 walleyes from 13 to 19.5 inches and all of them came on leeches. We also had one smally that was just over 17 inches. That was a good fight, and it swam away to fight again some day. We noticed that when using crawlers we got more perch, sheeps, and whitebass then walleyes. We caught very few "JUNK" fish while using leeches. Some spots that seem to be hot for perch are: Little Blackbird Island, Outer Bar, WFT Reefs along east shore near Pipe, Long Point. Most of these guys are using hellgrammites or crawlers with a slip bobber in around 10-14 feet of water. Walleyes are producing all over the system on the reefs, you just need to locate an active school of fish. Do not sit in one spot too long this time of year. If you do not find fish within 30 minutes move to the next spot. Use smaller sized jigs, such as 1/16 or 1/32 and let it get to the bottom of the reef before dragging it back. The fish are lazy right now, so really drag it as slow as you can. You will lose plenty of jigs, trust me, but it is well worth it in the end.

Member Posts: 59 Location: Appleton, WI | Good report AXL!!! Would like to go Saturday but have a golf tourney. You all have a good time and don't drink too much or you won't be able to get up early Sunday morning for any fish'n. I'll keep the things you said in mind. With that good report....it's almost as good as the report Mr. Skeeter gave all the time. So, Thanks! I miss his reports but he'll be back.
