Subject: Bay of GB Saturday, August 19th

Fished out of Suamico with a guest today. Beautiful morning and calm conditions made an easy trip to 23 feet of water North of Ganoes reef. While letting out the first 2 boards, my guest who is new to fishing on the bay asked me "how to you tell if a fish is on, and I answered, see those 2 boards we just put out, they both have fish on them. I knew it was going to be another great day. We caught 11 fish between 22 and 27 inches and a bunch more in the 18-21 inch range running 60 feet back with 5/8 oz keel weights with firetiger #5's at 1.5-1.7 mph.

Also did very well on a blade that I painted with a purple holigraphic front and a chartruese back with purple/green/orange glass bead combo.

When the wind picked up very strong out of the north, we ran in and fished shallow. In 4 passes, we caught and releases over 25 Walleyes, but not a one over 21 inches.

Please expound about the shallow! Shallow north or shallow south? Shallow as in 17',9' or 4'. I'm taking mama on Tuesday and may need to hide from the rough stuff.

Sorry.... the combination of shallow and no wind won't catch you any fish on the bay, at least not where I'm fishing. In general, the rougher the better when fishing shallow. We fished in 5 foot waves on Saturday, not for the faint of heart. If there is no wind, you need to head out deeper. In fishing shallow, I'm generally fishing 6-11 feet of water with heavy weed cover.

Lots of guys on the bay right now, more than I have ever seen in the last 2 years. All these guys fishing and no reports.

I'd have to agree, if you are hiding from the rough stuff you're not going to be near the fish. The shallow areas might get good at night in calm water though. I've always wanted to try night fishing the reefs up there to test that theory but never got around to it. Anyone care to comment on the night fishing up there?
I didn't get up there this weekend at all so I have no report, but I'm sure the same program is working.

Was out on Sunday from 8:00am till 3:00. Fished the same area as a friend did on Saturday. Those fickle walleyes avoided my boat. All I had to show for my efforts was one 22. Lots of grass floating on the top of the water. I was off geanos in an area that has produced for tthe last month. Trying again next weekend.

Mr bill,

Your welcome!!

Next week, myself and another Walleyfirst..er are headed up to the bay for a first ever night time trip. We are going to try all the things I use up at Bay de Noc to see if we can connect with some fish after dark. I can't wait to break out my lighted planer boards and my #18 husky rapalas (along with the other choices) and see a board go ripping back in the dark.

We'll let you know how the night time adventure goes. If we connect... I may never sleep again.

If anyone else has ever fished the bay after dark for Walleyes, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wife and I fished Tuesday 11-6pm.Guys were coming in saying the bite was good early and shut as the sun got high.We fished the same area, about 6-8 miles N/E of the launch, that had been producing for us.We managed only two.We were praying for wind.It was mighty flat.Only the flies were biting.Lots of grass floating. It was my fourth trip and first disappointing one.I've got a lot to learn about the Bay! It's a tough study from 4 hours away!

anontwo,

Keep moving until you find fish, I have run into the same conditions this year and was bound and determined to figure out how to get the fish to bite in the same area I had fished the day before. My fishing parnter on the other hand, will always suggest the exact oppisite of what I am thinking and one time this year, (ok maybe more than once), by moving or changing everything from colors to speed to depth to location, we have been able to get hooked up again with a new pattern that produces fish. Bright sun and no wind have not made a difference to me this year as long as you can get around the weeds. I've had many of my best days in flat conditions out in the deeper water only because my friend suggested something different. Last week, we were out on a flat calm day and the bugs were biting and driving us crazy. We noticed that the Walleyes were actually jumping out of the water chasing the bugs so we ran a couple of harnesses 15 feet behind the boards with no weights and started catching some very nice fish. I would not have believed if I had not seen it with my own 2 eyes. Never saw that before and I doubt I'll ever see that again.

Fished Tues 22nd east of Ganoes in 23ft from 11 to 3:30 only getting a 20 and 18 inchers. Both took a gulp worm behind large blade in yellow and green 70 ft back. Lots of marks on bottom. Thinking of using lead core this next time. Really nice day on the water to get a tan.

Wow, I'm not doubting the words team crestliner, BUT, how in the world do you get 17 fish in the boat in 30 mins with having to reset lines and such? Assuming you were trolling. maybe it was in a hour?

I believe you... and Stacker knows why... I had the same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago under the same exact conditions. Just ask him about my e-mail and the direction of the wind change. If does not come clean on this one, I may never send him another tip.

Thanks for the tip, anonymous.Actually,I've seen walleyes"surfing" on the Winnebago Ocean and caught them high elsewhere.Nothing about walleye fishing surprises me.I guess I just had a bad day.I'll be back if the weather ever settles down.I've only been on the bay four times and trolled harnesses all the time.It appears that's what everyone is doing.Am I wrong?I'm wondering why cranks wouldn't work. Are they worth a try or should I stick to the program?

yes sir, that is correct. There is, with out a doubt, a heck of a pile of fish when you find them, and they are HUNGRY.
