Some may see mixed blessing in this order. But I know a big portion of the Emerald Shiners we use for jigging walleyes comes form Canada. I'm not to personally happy about loosing this source of good bait.

Concerened about the spread viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), as of 10:00 am today, USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has banned interstate shipments of certain species of live fish from eight Great Lakes states and Ontario and Quebec.

VHS is normally a disease of coldwater fishes such as trout and salmon, and appeared in the U.S. a few years ago. In the lower Great Lakes the virus appears to have mutated into a warmwater form which caused a dieoff of freshwater drum and contributed to a dieoff of yellow perch in Lake Erie earlier this year. It has been detected in several other species that appear to carry the virus without suffering immediate mortality.

This order will have an impact on the Lake Erie sport fishery since a large portion of emerald shiners used here come from out of state. At this time fathead minnows and golden shiners are not on the prohibited list, lessening the immediate impact on counties south of Lake Erie. Ohio aquaculture and live hauling of wild fish also will be heavily impacted. The list of species regulated by this order are found below. To read the APHIS order, go to:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/aqua/pdf/vhs-fed-order_ogc-changes.pdf

The following States are designated as prohibited domestic areas: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. This extends also to Ontario and Quebec.

That can be a nasty disease for some fish, I can see where the concern comes from.
