We met at the ramp at 8:00am and I decided to get out of the already brisk, warm South wind by going up the Shiawassee River instead of fishing in the Saginaw itself. This would be better anyway's, as the clients wanted to learn my quarter casting technique as well as pick my brain about other river techniques I've mentioned in the past. We motored up the Shiawassee for a ways and settled into a hole I know near the edge of the river. I always try to anchor and position the boat in the best spot for my clients to easily cast to the side and work any ledge or current seam that (in general) holds the most fish during this time of year. I usually give a cast or 2, to show them the proper technique and then chime back in only to help or improve on their learning curve. Then for the most part I set up front, observe, net fish, re-bait minnows or re-tie lost jigs. I do cast and fish occassionally to what I can only describe as secondary water, usually the head of any holes, flats, or places not in that sweet spot. Wulp, today I made a first cast and was immediately into a big fish. He surprised me with a run that broke my line right off the bat. I re-tied and threw back into the same spot and had another on as soon as it hit bottom. When asked if I wanted the net, I replied no. This has to be a catfish. Well, long story short, it wasn't a catfish. And Nor were the 8 or 9 huge smallies I caught on Northland Mimic Minnows, out of 1 foot of water well out of the sweet spot. The big walleye also had a tag in her lip, and you can see it in the picture. She was released with tag intact. Oh the clients were also catching or missing fish almost constantly, but most were 13 to 14 incher's. All in all we had a great day. Boated maybe 25 to 30 walleyes. Had good company, fresh fried walleyes (with my secret batter) from Sundays Bay catch, and a day that we all stayed dry. Can't ask for much more. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by walleye express 11/29/2006 3:59 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() | ||
