I was out last night on the lake for a while. Plenty of ice, but it is getting sloppy at the access points. I went out on Waugoo and back in at Menominee Park. There were pretty good pools of water at both places, maybe a foot deep. The bridge was out, but the crack was crossable north of it. I had about 15-16" of ice out about 4 miles. Starting to get "soft" though. This storm and warm weather are going to make a mess of things.

These 45mph wind gusts certainly are not helping.

There are still quite a few shacks out although far fewer than the previous weeks. I've read reports that some had blown up to 1/2 mile from where they were placed. I also saw one report that showed the spearing holes enlarging under the ice house as the shacks collected heat during the warm spell. I'm going to try to get out today before the snow covers the cracks and makes traveling a risky proposition. I'm also guessing the barometric pressure will be dropping today in advance of the storm.

The bridges have been pulled up close to shore off of Ceape as of noon today.

So what does that mean when they pull the bridges close to shore?...There is still plenty of ice as of two days ago when I was out there and I usually didn't use the bridges to get in going off of Ceape Street.

Fly,

I suspect they don't want to have them buried in the snow. The hyper-sensationalist TV news was over-predicting the amount of potential snow.

Anyway, I was out from Waverly this afternoon from 4:25-6:25. The landing is still in good shape. I had a flurry of activity from 5:30-5:50 but the fish were small. One 10" eye, six 8" perch and a lawyer. Was fishing in 14' off the edge of a reef. Most fish came on small shiner under the deadstick, got a few on a small Northland red-glow Forage Minnow w/ a minnow head.

Viking, Thanks for the info.....I was having luck with a pink rat finkee with a small shiner on a deadstick, but was missing A LOT of fish....I know I let them take it enough, but I just kept losing the fish. Maybe using just a single regular hook instead of a jig with a small hook???? Any ideas??

I've been using a #16 treble and the smalest minnows in the bucket on the deadstick. They're not real agressive so I still lose a few but hook-up % is decent with the treble.

Plenty of ice in most places but not all! Be careful out there!!!

A 52-year-old man’s vehicle broke through the ice Saturday morning on Lake Winnebago...

Michael Piller’s 1995 Ford Explorer broke through a crack in the ice shortly after 6 a.m., said Sgt. Bill Anthes of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. Piller, who made it out of the vehicle before it sunk in 20 feet of water, was able to escape and get a ride back to shore unharmed. His vehicle, however, is a loss. Piller must make arrangements for the SUV to be removed from the lake, Anthes said.

As I understand it, this happened out from the Ceape St access. Be careful if heading out. The snow is very heavy and I'm sure is weakening the cracks at the same time it's covering them up.

Extreme caution should also be used in the Garlic Island area. A Jeep and a 4-wheeler have broken through in the last few days. A foot of snow and big drifts hide lots of hazards out there.

Thanks for the information Dale. I was planning on heading that way this weekend but will likely change my plans. Will the club be plowing roads at all?

We MIGHT plow. We've got a "winter mix" coming. With the warmer weather we could also see a big change in the cracks. I'll know more later in the week and keep you posted.

Anyone know what's going on with the county launch on Butte des Morts? They got a big backhoe out there....Heaven knows it could use some silt removal. No access there and Sand Pit is just about shot with the aerator, the run-off and a decent sized hole in the middle of the path.

Went off Ceape Wed night. Not too bad by the shoreline yet. A couple of slush holes but nothing too deep an no crack openings that I could see LOL. Caught 4 walleye kept 2 in 3 hours. All 2-7ft down. Otter Street did plow a road while we were out there!!! Good luck and hopefully this new snow or rain won't mess with the ice too much.

I was out Thursday from 7-2, only managed 2 Walleyes, 12", 19" both released and 13 Perch, 4 of which were over 8". The road off of Ceape was still fine except there is a nice slush spot located just south of where the truck went in. We pounded through it both times, but it is not going to be able to take much more abuse. I would think that Otter Street is in better shape at this time. As for the fish, we had to move at least 15 times and we would mark fish right away, and then nothing. The wind out there was BRUTAL! Good luck if you make it out and stay on top!

With the forecast calling for warmer weather we will not plow anymore this season. There's a lot of slush under the snow out there so be careful. Our landing remains open but it's at your own risk.
