Location: Menasha, WI | Was out Wednesday in 16' of water near Haystack Reef from 10am-2pm. Caught about 40 perch, only kept fish that were over 10" and I ended up with 10 in the bucket. Also picked up a few 8"-10" eyes (C&R). Almost all of the bigger perch and all of the eyes came on a tip-up with a rosie. Caught most of the smaller perch jigging pimples and forage minnows. The fish would come through in schools -- fast action for 10 minutes, wait 30 minutes, then another 10 minutes of fast action, wait 30 minutes,.....
Had to walk through about six yards of 6" deep water to get to the ice, but after that the ice was still pretty decent -- solid 4" on top, and honeycombed 6" under that. However, we got about an inch of driving rain last night and I suspect the top layer is honeycombing as well. That is enough to keep me off the ice from here on out.
All-in-all a decent season on the ice despite the poor ice conditions. I sure hope that strong year class of 6"-8" perch grows fat and happy over the summer. It will make for some very nice ice fishing next winter. Going to take the long sticks out tonight and see if the eyes are pushing through the river in Oshkosh and if this weather continues, I'll have the boat out within the next week.
