I'll call RangerPat and tell him to answer this. He has some mounting products he can advise you on. He's pretty good at handlining, so ask him lots of questions.

Here's a link to a reel mount on Pat's site for your viewing pleasure until he responds.

What are the benefits of hand lining and when would you use this technique?

If you are not a good jig fishermen.

If you lack boat control

If you like sitting all day

If you are just covering water

If you get in the pack

Best time to handline: Dirty water and heavy current.

Worst times: when the jig fishermen are smoking them.

its another tool to use to catch fish. it has nothing to do if you are a good jig fisherman or not. and it absolutley smokes fish when other methods dont.

Can you name a time when it has smoked fish when other methods haven't? I never seem to remember any of the big time pros winning a tournament doing this. Every tournament seems to be won jigging or rigging on these river tournaments and somethimes it's trolling with leadcore. It's a primative (sp) way of fishing and I'm sure has it's place, however it's never proven to be anything more than that.

It's three way fishing with a really heavy weight and no rod. I would never fish a method in a tournament that I would not do recreationally, I just don't find it much fun. Others seem to really enjoy it.

It sometimes works really well. Better that pulling 3-ways? Debatable. I have won tournaments pulling 3 ways but have not, other that the 1997 MWC Championship (see advantages when fishing in a crowd), seen one won using handlines, although I'm sure it's happened somewhere.

It does seem that there is a group of anglers who will fish handlines any time they get on a river for a tournament. I think they associate rivers with handlines, maybe had some success with them, and that's the thing they know how to do. There are also some really good, experienced river fishermen and/or guides who have handlining in their bag of tricks (i.e. Hutch) who really like it. More power to them.

How's this....my daughter and I had 5 days to fish during her Easter break. Current was fast, water was up and the fish were active in depths of 20-24 feet. We fished a community stretch of Pool 9, and in 5 days we caught 78 walleyes, only fishing about 5-6 hours a day. We fished one handline and one 3-way that needed 8 ounces of lead to stay on the bottom. Out of the 78 legal walleyes that we caught, (we caught some shorts and all of the other fish were from 16-24 inches) 72 out of the 78 came on the handline. The flow was in the 60's and the temps were nudging into the mid 40's. The DNR pulled nets in the same stretch every day and came up with very few fish.
Pre-spawn walleyes holding on the main channel edge in current too fast to jig or rig, that's when handlining kicks butt! Even had some doubles while we watched people trying to 3-way come up with very few fish....including our own 3-way rods.
Besides guaranteed bottom contact, you have fewer problems with debris.
And that was just one week.
I've been in the garage putting some custom colors on some old Rapalas and licking my chops, just waiting for the current to increase beyond "jiggable" so I can break out the handlines. It's also much easier for my daughter AND a lot of fun.
Oh, for mounting? The reels fit in my rod holder brackets and lock in place. They are positioned so the shank and the fish drop right in the open livewell.

I can put baits where you can only wish you could!
Also at the 2004 FLW Championship I ended up 13th. Had I not experienced a group of 11 guys that thought I looked lonely after day one, I truly believe I may have pulled it off.
A friend wrote a good article on my website check it out.
