Bernie - My favorite is a Loomis CR722 (6' med action) with a Cabela's Prodigy baitcaster (flipping switch) filled with 8lb. Flame Green Fireline. Have a pair of them - GREAT jigging outfit. Won't be long now. Good fishing. Bob

Bernie,

I am partial to the 6'3" St. Croix Legend Tournament Walleye rod made specifically for jigging in rivers. The model is the TWS63MXF Vertical Jig rod and is the best I've ever used!

Good luck and Fish Hard,

JB

For me it's the Loomis SJR 782 IMX. This rod has the right tip and a ton of backbone. I use only Shimano spinning reels, because I believe they are the best you can get. There are a lot of nice rods out there, but I have yet to find any that are better than my Loomis rods. I know others make some rods that are close, but I have had Loomis rods for so long that I'm used to them and have not found a reason to go in another direction.
You will get a bunch of answers to this question, based on what guys own. I can only tell you that few rods have lasted the test of time like the IMX blanks, and many other companies have been trying to match this blank and action.

The best thing about this rod is that in a pinch I can Lindy rig with it (I use 8400's mostly) or I can pitch cranks with. Loomis makes many rods that work the best for certain things, most is by what feels the best for you. Since this site is based in WI and so is ST Croix you will have more guys tell you they use them. They also make a fine rod, I just can't see starting over when I own so many different actions it would cost me thousands to switch them all and I don't think it would be worth it anyways.

I love my st. croix avid. but i guess i never used a gloomis. fireline 6lb. The most important thing is match your rod with correct lb line, and use the right weight jig. Id never use my walleye rod to jig for browns with 1/2oz crocks.. i got a premire for that, and agan, it works great..

Dont be blinded by glmoois and croix, fenwick, diawa as well as the basspro and cabela's rods can be just as good. Its all personal perferance and getting comfortable with what you use.

thanks to all of the comments so far. I really can't wait. I have been getting more serious the last two years and have started to feel like I am missing out on what the detroit river can offer. Fish on!

i have both of the st.croixs
the 6-3 mxf i use mostly with 1/4 oz jigs
the 6-8 river jig rod in m xf is noticeably stiffer
i would lean toward that for 3/8 oz to 1/2 oz if that is
what is usually used on the detroit
try them both
go to the store
cut off a bit of line and tie it a couple of guides in
then tie on the different weight jig and make your decision

Scheel's offers a tournament series rod for $80, I think they are a great "feeling" rod. Now to just add a few to the collection.

Bass Pro Shops Extreme Rods are excellent for the money. I bought 4 of these and teamed them with Abu Garcia reels for my river clients. Each rig ran a little over $80.00 back then when I bought them in quantity. I personally use a rare 2 piece IM-6, 6' 6" custom built Loomis I had built 20 years ago and still use it.

What type of action should I be looking for. I found a rod with medium and medium light as my choices."Walleye AnglerĀ® Signature Series Spinning Rods" from Bass Pro Shops.I can order it online. The closest retailer to visit would be Dicks Sporting goods. It's 7 minutes from home.Does anyone know if they have a good rod and reel. I am going to spend less then $100. thanks for the advice.
