It looks like mother nature was good to all of us this past weekend and the from what I have read and heard from others, the fishing was pretty good as well. Here is what I know from this past weekend:

Point Comfort is doing well for walleyes both trolling cranks and casting cranks in the shallow waters anywhere from 2-5 feet of water. Some bigger fish are showing up here.

The East Shore is doing well for walleyes at night using lighted slip bobbers with leeches. The guys off of the docks are in heaven right now, and I hope they have some fun for a few weeks.

Speaking of leeches....They are running on the small side right now, but from what I have heard, the jumbo sized leeches will be here in the bait shops real soon. A few weeks at the most. I really like to use the biggest leeches I can find, and thought I would pass this onto you all is all.

Ok, back to fishing......

The reefs along the West Shore are producing fish. There seems to be a lot of fish in the 14-16 inch size range. Crawlers and small jigs seem to be the best presentation. If you are not finding fish, you need to move to a different location. There are several days where we will move 5 or 6 times to locate an active feeding school of walleyes. Do not just sit in one spot for the entire trip. Do you want to catch fish, or just fish, is what you have to ask each other.

The crappie action has heated up in Stockbridge Harbor, most are using small minnows under a slip bobber. This is a lot of fun, so if you want some good pan fish action, get out there now and try it.

The Mouth of the Fox River in Oshkosh has been slow for trolling, but it should get better in the next few days. I like to either troll small Shad Raps here, or even go to the steep shelf and pump flies against the current.

Sunset Point on BDM is doing well in close to the point with slip bobbers and crawlers in on the rocks. There are a lot of boats here right now, but there seems to be a lot of fish in this area right now as well.

Paukotuk Reef has had some good action for some walleyes too. This can be a little tricky to find, but if you spend a few extra minutes looking, it might be well worth your time and effort. I had 2 different reports that they were getting fish on slip bobbers tipped with leeches here. Both reports said they had there limit within 2 hours.

Trolling along the North shore is slow right now. I thought this might be good and sent Winnebago Viking out there to try it, and he struck out. Sorry Viking my bad! we usually do very well along the 16 foot break from Waverly to High Cliff, so I was kind of looking forward to a good report here. I like to run perch colored Shad Raps or Walleye Divers here 30-50 feet behind the boards. This area is usually pretty good because of the sand to gravel transition area.

I did talk to a guy on Saturday at the show, that had 5 fish off of his dock along the North Shore. He lives close to the North Shore Golf Course, so it was nice to see that the fish are on the North Shore.

I would look for Stevens Reef to heat up in the next week also. We usually do pretty good here early in the year casting small jigs tipped with half a crawler and dragging it along the bottom. Last year at this time, this was my go to spot. I like to fish the southern part of the reef where the water level is usually about 6-7 feet.

I have not heard much from the southern part of the lake recently. I have not been there. The last report I was given told me that the perch action was doing OK on the 3rd reef. Not a lot from this part of the lake right now.

A few boats were fishing the old river channel out of Menasha this Saturday. It looked like they were anchored and fishing for perch as well. I usually like to go here for Smallmouth Bass, but it may be a bit early for that right now.

The river continues to produce a lot of males in the 10-14 inch range. I hope you are letting some of these smaller walleyes go to grow up and be caught again someday. There are enough walleyes in the 13-18 inch size to eat, and no reason to keep those little ones. If they are hooked real bad, or bleeding, please do keep them though.

This next week is going to be very busy all over the system. The PWT is here getting ready for their tourney and the MWS tourney will be held on April 29, 2007. I hope everyone gives each other a little extra room, has some patience, and please remember to help someone out if they are in trouble.

We are so blessed to have a great fishery right in our backyard and if we all work together and help each other out, it can be a great day on the water everyday. Slow down early, do not swamp boats, wether big or small boats, have fun and if you see any of the tourney guys around, pull over and talk to them. almost all of them will BS with you a bit, and they are a great bunch of guys too. You may even get a free tip or two. They bring a lot of talent and a lot of money to the community, and I am glad they all are here, and hope you are too.

Be good, have fun, be safe and try and take a kid out fishing with you.

Axl, nice report. I was wondering why you switched from a Warrior boat to a Tuffy? I am looking at purchasing a new rig in the next month and just wanted your opinion as I was looking at Warrior and Lund. Thanks

Axl,

No worries. Even though we didn't get any fish on the north end I had a great afternoon with my 4-year old out on the water.
