| Hey guys, just wondering if there is a surefire way to tell if a walleye is male or female. During the spawn it's pretty obvious, but how about the rest of the year? I see the TV shows like John Gillespie's, where every fish they catch under 16" or so is proclaimed to be a male. Thanks |

| They're right, they are males......that's because the females want nothing to do with your worm. You'll see the same thing on a friday night at your local tavern.
Good Luck. |

| HA HA Jayman! I kind of expected a response like this. You should be out fishing, instead of hanging out in the tavern. |

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I E-mailed my DNR biologets buddy your question. Heres his answer.
You cannot go by size alone in my opinion. Outside of the spawning period you have to open up the fish to internally examine the sex organs. Some species of fish do have a different configuration of the anal vent opening between sexes. I think Pike do, but not in walleye. |

| Thanks, walleye express. I have seen many fishing shows where they just assume that all smaller walleyes are males. I'm sure that out of every 100 fish hatched that 50 or so would be female. |
