Hit the water early this morning at 5am and headed down to the mud off Garlic Island. Trolled for an hour and caught 2 small 12 inch Walleyes and not another bite. I tried every depth and speed, just could not get it to work, so I decided to run over to the East Shore about 3 miles out from Calumet Co park. It took me while to dial in the Walleyes. Last week, I was getting them 50 back with an 3/8 oz weight. Tried that for 30 minutes with no luck. I noticed how high in the water column the fish were so I decided to stager my lines and harness colors 20-30-40 back on an 1/8 oz inline weight and 30 back was the trick.

30 back with #5 Northland Baitfish Perch Holigraphic/Gold back @ 1-1.25 with the 1/8 oz weight. Caught and released a 24 & 1/2 and another 6 fish over 20 inches. Over all, the whitebass and Sheephead were mixed right in with the Walleyes today and I ended up catching around 20 Walleyes from 14 inches to my biggest fish so far this year.... a 24.5 which is still swimming. I was done by 10am. On my way back to Jefferson Park, I stopped out in the mud about a mile from the outer bar and ran the same set-up for an hour just to see if it would work. I caught 2 17-18 inch Walleyes and nothing else.

Hope this helps those of you who only get out once in a while dial it in a little quicker!

Very nice work. 6yo has been dying to try his first pink (for mom) crawler harness. Gonna give it a shot this weekend.

Slower night tonight needed a bit of wind but it came too late! Only managed 7 nice ones and a lot of "shakers". Heres a nice sauger (last night), sorry but had to white out the bait as it really is the hottest one in my box! stuck with patterns that worked but without the wind I should have adapted to find out what happened but was just too exhausted. What do you do when the bite diminishes by 50% and the only difference is 24 hours and wind reduced from 3-5 to zero! Boat traffic isn't an issue all conditions were the same except for the slight change in wind speed!
Good Luck

Chase and Scott choose to skip fishing tonight to spend some time with Brett! I think he got the better deal

Let's all try and guess the secret bait.... just giving you a friendly little dig! Maybe you could do a series of posts were you reveal just a portion of the bait every week and the winner could receive an autographed bait... hehe

What a cool picture. No, not of #4. The sauger! There are some really nice saugers out there this year. I hope everyone is putting them back.

Was out last night with Eric. It took us a bit to get out from the floaters, but once we did, we did just fine. Fiah were caught from 8' down to just off the bottom. #7 Clown Shad Rap took the bigger fish, 150' back. Bright DJ's and PP DJ's from 40 -80 back took the meat fish. North end in the mud, 2+- MPH. There 's gonna be a fish fry at my house tomorrow night!

Secret Lure,

There really are not that many lures with that size silver hook.

I used to have that, someone swiped it from my snoopy tackle box, but the person
who took it did not find the secret dive curve.

I forgot to mention that as I was trolling on Wednesday, I hooked a ball of line and weeds that had a #7 Rapala "Green Bay Packer" Shad Rap attached and the treble hooks had the fresh remains of a Walleye's lips still attached.. not kidding.

I was fishing near Tyee's "big Fish" honey hole... hmm... Maybe that is his secret lure, I'll have to have the guys in Forensiecs examine the silver hook in the photo and compare it to the Packer Rap's hooks to see if there is a match... and with a picture of his son with Brett... now it is all starting to make sense.

ps... the lips still attached to the hook looked huge!

Tyee - nice fish. Looks like that sauger has a white tip on it's tail - could it be a Saugeye?

Ok now THATS funny, Here it is again!

Tonight wasn't as good only managed 5 "keepers" Much slower, got two right away at the same depths with zero wind, the boats came out at 5 and most were gone by 7? A Purple Walleye minnow did work well tonight, as a White #5 glass caught a couple more saugers, the purple t-stick got lots of sheeps and a couple walleyes. As well the lure in the photo always puts a couple in the boat. I need to order some as thre are not any around the valley. It deffinately slowed down as yesterday there were lots of boats still out later! Is the temp driving the fish deeper? or higher? Did they go on a feeding frenzy a couple of days ago when the weather and wind stabilized and are stuffed? Do they go higher and feed when it's flat? I like to think that after 30 years of fishing this system I should have it figured out but honestly every day is a learning experience! Here's your shot PS, The bait is not Purple!
Good Luck
Tyee

Took my daughter Lisa out for a short trip last night. Caught 4 walleye and about 3 bales of hay... Don't think I've ever seen so much floating grass on Winnebago. We moved twice trying to get out of the hay field (a total of 6 miles between the two moves) but never got out of it.

Lisa caught twin 20 inch fish (for the record, my tape does start at zero), a 16 incher, and a 10 incher. Not bad for an hour on the water.

If this weather holds, I wouldn't be surprised to see a limit of 20 inch fish from 1/2 of the field for otter street.

On Tyee's sauger, I'm pretty sure that is sauger, not a saugeye. I remember reading somewhere that 'bago doesn't have saugeye since the two species have such different spawning habitat.

Good Luck
