New User Posts: 2 | I need to replace both of Trojan SCS 225's that are in my boat. I got just over 6 years use out of them, and they finally bit it. I have a Minn Kota Riptide 74lb thrust 24V. So with those two big batteries in the back of the boat, I would really like to replace them with something lighter. I have a Tracker Pro Deep V-17 Tournament, and weight is a big consideration when it comes to the batteries in the back of the boat. I was considering the Optima Troll Fury - 2 - 34 series batteries mounted in a tray, but are there any other manufacters that make good batteries that don't weigh all that much ?

Member Posts: 3899 | The Optima's are the lightest that I know of. Actually, they are the only Spiral Cell battery I've heard of. Do a Google search for Spiral Cell Batteries and you may come up with some others.

| You are looking in the right direction with Optima. However, I would recommend going with two 31 series instead of the Troll-fury. The fury is actually two 24 series batteries. Depending on your usage it might come up short in run time. For more specifics check out optimabatteries.com The original batteries are in every boat that I have sold since 2003. Tommy Kemos | |||

New User Posts: 1 | I've switched every boat (three in all) I own over to Northern Batteries. Another label name for them is "AmeriStart." Excellent quality at an affordable price! I had them in my last two rigs & they lasted the life of my ownership which was 4 yrs. in one case and five in the other. However, as "Tommy" recommends I too agree the best way is group 31 batteries even if the reserve is more then needed. Maintain them accordingly and they will treat you right! Nothing like having power to spare when it comes to electronics.

| I would think twice about using Optima batteries, even the 31 series. I had them for 2004 and 2005 and was glad to get rid of them last spring. Two Optima 31's would not get me through an eight hour tournament, sorry. I'm using Trojan 21 series batteries that have the 225 minutes reserve and I'm much happier now. Those Optima 31's only have 175 minutes reserve. I was floundering in a couple 2005 tournaments, having run out of battery power. | |||

Member Posts: 3899 | The new Tuffy has Remy Battery, Group 31's, like all my other boats had. Was out this weekend on Pewaukee in some windy conditions. Used the TM on 6 most of both days. There were three LED's on the test button on the TM last night when I went plug it in. These batterys are built by Johnson Controls, and have served me well. I average 4-5 years on them. They cost me $70 each. Great value, as far as I'm concerned.

The more lead the better battery. You can't get around this. As I teach my students, you need the lead surface to react with the chemicals . More lead, more surface, more reaction. Stay with the Trojans, they are GREAT batteries.

Member Posts: 2393 Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | Checkout Minn Kota at Gander. They are usually on sale this time of year and they are TROJAN batteries. I think you mean 31 series not 21.
