Drove a friends F250 with the diesel. Wow, that things puts down some power.

Weight maybe?

The horse power that can be generated with diesel is impressive. With that said they could reduce the weight issue, by kicking up the turbo boost and fuel rail pressures/flow and generate more HP from a "smaller" block.

I would suspect that RPM's is the biggest limiting problem. 3-4K r's is "top end" for diesel vs. 6K R's that we see with today's outboards.

Great link...

I loved this: "In an effort to further demonstrate the potential of diesel power, California-based Gale Banks Engineering designed, built and raced a Cummins-powered pickup at the Bonneville Salt Flats in October 2002. The truck set a top speed of 355 km/h (222 mph) and became the world’s fastest pickup, and almost equally as notable, the truck drove to the race towing its own support trailer."

Better mileage and hole shot I figure. Smaller fuel tank? Less weight? Faster boat?

I watched a TV program a few years ago about commercial fishermen on the Caspian Sea and they were using diesel powered outboards. They were Russian built I believe.Imagine trolling with one of those beauties or pull starting on a chilly morning! Everywhere you fish would smell like the Illinois River!
