Fred Trost died this afternoon. http://www.joesportsman.com/ He was Mort Neffs camera man years ago when Michigan Outdoors was a part of every Michiganders Thursday night entertaiment. After Morts retirment, Fred took over the show (and some say) eventually ran it into the ground. I personally met, worked with and was featured on 2 episodes of his show in the early years, before he brought polotics into some and then most of his segments. There were indeed some things I liked about Fred and some I did not. But this legacy could be said about many men and he did stick to his guns in virtually all his business decisions. And that I can respect in any man rather friend or foe and God rest his soul. Here's a picture I took of Fred after our first fishing show we did. He's holding his very first Saginaw River ice walleye he caught on a Bay-De-Noc sweedish pimple.

There was many people that did not like Fred Trost, However, I was not one of them. I was a bit to young to remember Mort Neff and I think many did not like Fred because he took Morts spot. The changing of the guard was tough for many to swallow. Fred told it the way he seen it. His biggest down fall was when he had deer estrus scents analyzed to see what they were made out of. That was maybe the most distructive to his carreer, yet the most truthful part of reporting ever done. Sportsman everywhere should have applauded him, yet they scorned him. Bob Gardners show now sucks. He was a better side kick.

"From The rugged shores and woodlands, to the northern history, Fred will always be the one that I remember, as a young man, growing into the outdoors world. He did plenty for the sportsman of Michigan. Thanks Fred.

I liked Fred, he had some big shoes to fill taking over for Mort. 2 different types of persons. Fred has to be remembered as a very out spoken advocate for the sportsman’s of Michigan’s rights – you and I. Really have to respect him for that. I think the lawsuit against him was his big down fall. Must have really caused him terrible, terrible stress to his life from then on, even in the long run ruin his heath. The funniest clip of Fred that I can remember is him in that pond with some other guy and they were catching snapping turtles. Fred was scared to death out there. Every time the water made a wake he was wanting to walk on top. God Bless you Fred and thanks for many years of entertainment. Prayers for the family for sure. Nels Mi

growing up i had a teacher who used to call me mort. i was a faithful follower and my father made a few apearances on his show. when fred took over it was quite a change. it took a while for me to learn to enjoy a new approach. i did become a regular viewer of his program and even if i did disagree with his take on a subject i still had to respect his research and willingness to present it. a lot of his subjects weren't glamorous or even modern, but each recieved his full attention.
fred will be missed.
God speed

Here is a copy and paste from an email I just received from Eric Sharp along with my reply. Skeeter

I think Eric, that the timing of such a writing is really uncalled for no matter what he did. 2 wrongs do not make a right. You would have been the better man for just putting it to bed so to speak. Putting the hammer to a dead man good or bad is totally unacceptable. I personally honestly think if you had to do it again you wouldn't do it judging by the numerous negative replies you have received. Don't you agree? I am betting you are thinking of a positive way of get out of this mess. You replied to me saying all these things have been written in the FP before. Yes they probably have been but he was alive then. I have seen on several web sites very negative response to this writing. Do you agree? Nels

Nels,
Re the Trost story, everything in it had appeared in the Free Press previously, and he was given opportunities to respond. I did not include other things that he had not responded to, like stealing $20,000 from a foundation he set up and funneling it to his for-profit business.
While you might disagree with the timing of the story, the unpleasant truth is that the real Fred Trost wasn't the same person people saw on TV. He was a con man, a liar and a thief, and he hurt a lot of people.
If you ever get a chance, read the opinion written by the judge who removed his bankruptcy protection. She summed him up better than anything else I've seen. Sincerely, Eric Sharp

This guy Eric Sharp makes me want to puke. I know, sometimes when you grow up with something, Trost and Michigan Outdoors, you believe everything to be true that is said on that show. Back then there just wasn't alot of informational shows. In this case, sharp took facts and posted them to kick a man when he is DEAD! Not down, DEAD!

The facts that Trost showed about deer scents tore him down as a business man. As sportsman, again, he should have been applauded. I would love to have skeeter and/or who ever find the results of the doe-in-heat tests and post them here, on walleye first, as a tribute to Trost. I don't know if Steve or Zach would mind, but I sure would like everyone in Wisconsin to see what we seen, in michigan, back in the 80's.

Denny

I knew of about 2/3 of what Eric wrote about Fred in his commentary and in his response to Nels. Working with him personally a few times I knew almost instantly that Fred was for Fred. But isn't everybody with a business to run for themselves first? Seems they better be. Few checks ever arrive inscribed "Pay to the order of the nice guy working for nothing". Of course this does not excuse those things he did that were against the law. But the fact remains we should all only have one critic after we draw our last breathe, and only he should be allowed to critique our past lives.

If you put your name out there, people will develop an opinion. Some will like your message. Some will not. Some will swear they knew you "back in the day". Others will say they knew you were bad from the start.

On the topic of buck lures, I don't know the specifics of his study, but it appears this guy worked pretty hard to show that the "doe in estrus" products did not live up to their claims. Unless he was pretty naive, he should have know there was going to be consequences for his claims. The little guy is going to lose that fight more times than not.

And while I agree that it is in very bad taste to berate someone before the earth as settled around his grave, I can't say that I'm surprised to see it happen. We appear to have a large portion of society that make a living by promoting hate, fear, and the "me first" attitude. Since most of us are reaonably apolitical, we don't really notice it until it spills over into topics a little closer to home. Kind of sad really - some people will not miss a chance to make a name for themselves - even if it means using another persons death to do it.
