I am looking at buying a new rod and am wondering which of the 2 brands is better. Thanks.

Both are good manufacturers. It's really a Chevy/Ford argument.

My personal feelings...G.Loomis is really having QC problems these last few years. Inspect any off the rack rod you intend to purchase carefully. St. Croix is in my mind the industry leader today. Design, performance, tooling, R&D... And I also feel you get more for your dollar from them.

Yes I have to agree with Matt, but I'm a Chevy guy. I have both rods for Walleye Fishing and like both.... but there is a sweet spot on my hand for the Loomy. It would be best to fish with all three styles from both Manufacturers in various sizes and judge for yourself. When you compare the Elite to the GLX they are pretty close and pricy, but the Loomis GL2 is a better rod than the Croix Premier in my mind, I have little experience with the Avid but LOVE the IMX. How many Pro Staffers can chime in on this one as it is a very good topic for discussion?

Oh yes, I really love my 6 foot IMX for pitching jigs. Extra light rod that can be worked all day with little fatique coupled with an extra fast tip to feel every vibration sent to the rod by the jig.

I recently purchase a new jig pole and had it custom made by Mattman. It sports a G. Loomis Mag-Light Power, Ex-Fast tip IMX SJ720 blank, with an extra light Fuji reel seat. Had this OtterRod special built for those rock piles on my favorite Lake, Winnebago!

I'm strickly a Loomis man. Feel in love with them years ago so much, that I got on program with them and use them exclusively in my guide work. My customers really enjoy the chance to fish with them since many have only dreamt of having one to fish with. I've got 32 of them right now, and am going to be spending some time with a couple of the factory reps this summer on the water fishing and discussing a rod I would like to see them add to their bronzeback series.

I can't really say too much about St. Croix. I know they are also a very good rod, and I even have a Premier I bought for my wife to use some years ago, and think it is a very nice rod. I have never done a one on one comparison between the different models, so I will just speak about the ones I do know, use, and endorse. In the end, the rod that feels the best in your hand, balances best with the reel you like, and you have the most confidence in, is the rod that is best. Rods are much like wine, individual taste is what makes it the right one!

St Croix are the best. I use a Legand Elite and a Avid. Jig fishing is what I do most and feeling the bite is most important. I can feel the Walleye bite with the line slack. Gotta Love a St Croix.

I used GLoomis for years until I picked up a Ledgend Elite 7' Med and fell in love. I primarily use a 7' med for jigs under most conditions but right now my rod of choice is a 6'6" 1 piece Avid ultra light. This thing is fabulous for small jig/minnow combinations and any live bait rigs. When used with 4lb test 1lb diam. fire line, almost any fish is the fight of a lifetime. I also use a Teka Ceetus (?sp) reel w/ this rod and it works great.
Until GLoomis comes up with something better, St. Croix fills my rod locker!!

My decision is between buying an avid or premier series St Croix compared to buying a GL2 from GLoomis.

If you come down to buying an Avid or a GL2... Go with the Avid. The Avid is a much nicer rod than the GL2.

If between the Premier and GL2... Pretty close to a toss up there. Probably have to give the nod to the GL2 though. It's close.

A friend of mine builds custom rods. He orders mostly St.Croix blancks. He is very knowledgeable on rods. He told me Gloomis is getting kind of cheap, not using as good of quality guides etc. He builds St.Croix rods at a cheaper price and there custom to exactly what you want.
