starting out after lunch today my wife, Becky and I ventured out on the Bay looking for some fishing spots for upcoming booked trips. The Coast Guard Cutter, Mackinaw was heading back south around 2:00 PM and was pretty cool watching this somewhat small boat "busting" up the ice like it did!
Tomorrow a freighter is heading up to the Kipling Coal Docks so keep an eye out fisherman for it's arrival.
Setting up and we concentrated on deeper waters of about 30 feet.
Once set with the shanty and setting several tip-ups rigged with shiner minnows with just off bottom and one about 5 feet off bottom it was time to start working "searching" baits in the portable Frabill shanty.
Becky and I were working these baits slowly using a Nils Master in clown color and a Buckshot Rattle Jig both being tipped with a small 2 inch jigging minnow. Some lively bait coming from Chris the Bait Shop Guy http://www.baydenoc.com/bayviewsports. When it comes to advice and the latest in ice fishing tackle needs both Chris and Diane can help you out. We do have some other shops in the area that also can key in on your fishing needs.
The key depth seemed to being in that 30 to 32 feet of water relating to structures, another key was keeping the presentations very slow!!!!! We seen numerous fish on the electronics as the
FL 8 was lighting up. Key times and our bite tonight seemed to begin around 4:30 and running for the upcoming hour.
Becky caught one fish of 26 and 1/4 inches, had another one on immediately after this fish was iced that we estimated at probably 28 to 29 inches. This fish was lost at the hole and the "camera-man" yes me thought I had some great video and forget to hit the "record" button, "Hay, it's about fun and lot's of excitement!" Also catching 2 just undersize walleye and icing another on a tip-up at 17 inches fishing about 5 feet off bottom.
Not bad for about a good 4-hours of fishing!
Indeed a fun afternoon/evening of fishing and looking like a future of some good ice angling coming up in the upcoming weeks.
If your looking for a guided trip up here fella's let's not wait, were are booking trips right now.
What a great day of fishing spending it with a very special person,
Good luck fisherman and we'll keep you updated to the daily fishing,
