Location: Otterlake MI | just wondering what everybody does to bet the little pests as i haven't found a way to do it with out speed trolling or pulling lines and running but that only gives you enough time to get the lines back in the water before they show up again with all there budys |

| I take it you're talking about the bugs that aren't affected by bug sprays? Nothing you can do about them, except put up with them....zone them out, and keep fishing.
I don't mind the lake flies and mayflies, since they only tickle....it's the dang biting black flies (the kind that can bite through socks) that "bug" me. Lot's of bug spray on the ankles works pretty good to keep them off. A little "Yard Guard" sprayed around the inside of the boat's floor area works for those pesky biters too.
My only problem is....remembering to put bug spray in the boat's glove box!! Doh! Ouch, ouch, ouch!

After my "lord of the flies" trip last Saturday, I've done a few things that I've been told helps out. I will deffinetly be trying what one poster suggested and move or troll away from what would be the main hatch area, but I'm trying other things as well. I bought a full box of those little towlete fabric softeners and have strategically stuffed/hidden them around my boat. I've been told that the smell keeps both flies and spiders (another problem) at bey. I also gave my wifes friend (who is an Avon lady) some business and ordered 4 cans of "Skin so soft" bug and fly spray. I've heard good things about this product for years, and it also has sunblock in it so it will do double duty.
I've already noticed that the day after stuffing the fabric softener, the spider webs were down at least 75% on my boat. And that musty smell in the cabin, is now "Snuggle" fresh.  I don't know why or how you get so many spiders when docked on the water all summer, but the boat can look like a ghost ship after just a couple nights setting. And any clients I have, think I haven't been out in weeks when they get aboard because of them.

Location: Manitowoc, WI | For the biting bugs: my good friend Hutch gave me the hot tip on how to deal with them. He takes Lemon Joy, mixes it with water, and sprays it on his shins and ankles. Keeps them off just fine. |

| For the pesty lake-flies I found that dark clothing will help keep most off,and another good trick is to use the sunscreen"Banana boat" they land and take off immediately.There is something in it they don't like. |

Location: Port Washington, wisconsin | What bothers me most is the zillion bugs around my face. Makes it difficult to even breathe. I have purchased 2 head gear bug shields from Gander mtn. that work absolutely great. For about 5 bucks they are worth their weight in gold on Winnebago. They aren't the prettiest but they are very effective. Saved a lot of fishing days. |

Location: Menominee MI, In Da UP Eh? | Hutch's Lemon Joy tip is a good one, as is the bug suits and bug headgear. I have used a mixture of Lemon oil and water round the yard and garden to control pests for some time now. One of the chemicals in the lemon is what does the trick. And it is no where near as expensive as the commercially available bug sprays and it is not hazardous to your health if you get dowsed by it.
Anyone who bow hunts in the mosquito factory we call Wisconsin and the UP knows about bug guard clothing. Ya, you can look fairly rediculous in bug gear, but you aren't being eaten alive either! And no pesky deet to cause health problems later!
