Anyone know the best knots for tying 28lb lead to a mono leader? something that will stay low profile and not get caught up in the eyes of my rods.

Thanx,

JG

i like to put a small knot in the lead core, then attach the mono with a surgens knot. also i have used a small barrel swivel,a fishermans knot will hold both lead and mono

Hi Jason,
If you plan to use leadcore for waleye fishing, 28lb. might be a little overkill. Consider 17lb. instead. It's easier to deal with. Besides Larry's method you can also use back to back uni knots. I can't describe how to do it but there is a web site where they show how to tie many knots. I hope one of the other members here can supply the address. Good Luck.

Something i have been pondering. Does 28lb weigh more than 17lb? I know the strength is different but what about the weight? Also I know that 27lb is thicker so there will be more drag on the line. What one will sink deeper? Im new to lead so i dont know the ins and outs of it. Any help would be appreciated.

Doug Schreiber, AKA Hot Jigs, showed me how to connect mono to lead core last fall. I have since forgotten exactly, but it goes very much like this.

Push the braid up a little, exposing the lead. Pinch off the lead, start an overhand knot in the braid, but do not tighten. Leave it very loose. Then, thread the mono up into the braid past the knot you started. When the mono is well past the braid, tighten the knot, and presto! You have a very secure connection, and it doesn't hang up in the guides.

There is the same amount of lead in 17 and 27 lb test. Definately go with the 17lb. I tie and overhand knot in the leadcore after removing the lead out of the end and a fishermans knot with the mono above the overhand leadcore knot. Never had a single problem and I run lead ALOT!!! I almost forgot to thank Larry Eaton for getting me hooked on it. Thanks buddy, I have caught some hogs this year thanks to leadcore. I owe you one.

A couple of years ago Jim Kissinger showed me the method that Shep mentioned. I have used it since and it has not failed me yet. I have to say that it looks too simple, but seems effective.
Take care,

Dale K. and Larry eaton showed me the line up the inside trick, works great and fast! Little tougher with heavier leader, wonder how it works with Fireline?

I use whats called a blood knot with fireline and it works pretty good. Basically you take both ends and wrap them around each other a few times and then slip the ends back through any loop in the strands on both ends and pull tight. It works for me.

Shep has the right knot to use. Simple, fast, strong, and small!
