Anybody have a recommendation on a jig style to use? Do you normally use weedless jigs and if so what brand?

thanks

No need to use weedless but if you are no accurate you will get snagged up. Pretty much any style will work.

I like using veggie jigs in the cane. My partner used lindy no snags. Both worked great for us.

Slow pokes here also. Not weedless.

Would that be with leeches or crawlers? Do we have to wait until they get really green or are there fish in them all year round?

thanks

I use leeches, the wife won't touch one so she uses crawlers. I would say its about the same. Maybe leeches have a little edge. I start in June and they are already pretty green by then. I don't wait for them to get green but I am fishing bass and bluegills in may and get back to walleyes in June.

Cain and Able? My preacher does.

As for cane? I pitch it infrequently. Last time was 2 or 3 years ago. Prefishing and saw a swirl about 30 yards ahead. Got my 1/2 oz jig and plastic, tossed it out, and set the hook on what turned out to be a very pretty 42" musky! I didn't fish that cane bed for the tourney!

When I do, I use a 1/8" jig or gold plated Slo-Poke with a small piece of crawler. Pitch to the pockets on the edge, let it flutter down. When you get bottom, reel in and repeat. Work every nook and cranny. They really crush it on the drop!

My experience has shown that the best time to be pitching cane is when the carp are spawning. They seem to stir up the bottom exposing the little bugs and this starts the whole food chain. The bird activity around the cane can be a good sign too.

Are fish around the cane all year? Yes, I believe so. But there are more of them around at the end of May and beginning of June IMHO.

Use the lightest jig you can get away with and/or bobbers. Some days 1/2 crawler works better, other days a small leech. You need to experiment.

IMHO cane closer to deeper water (all relative) is better than cane far removed from drop offs. Fish the windward side. Stay out of the cane with your boat.

Accurate casting/pitching is must. as Shep indicated. You should become good at hitting the pockets. the closer and more accurate the cast, the more fish you will catch. I have experimented with 12-14' rods for this purpose.

My Uncle Jack, who lives in the house I was born in on Sunset Bay, used to use 20+ foot cane poles! He used to tell me that's why they called them cane poles!

My Tuffy doesn't have a rod locker long enough for those!

I use collapsible cane poles on the river a lot in spring but haven't tried them in the cane beds yet. I suppose it's pretty much the same as pitching the weed pockets on bago .
