Hey Buddy...I see you have a talent of writing as well as catching fish. I was suprised to say the least when I saw your smiling face with a piggy sauger and the article to boot.

It always good to see that good walleye fishermen are willing to share information on what works for them. I have never used jigs as big as you describe in the article and will have to try the technique.

One thing, do you just use the jig with a minnow or do you use some big plastics in combo with the jig and the minnow???

Yes, that article was first rate.

Think this well-spoken good-looking young fisherman needs to exercise this writing talent more often!

I can speak first hand as to Rich's fishing ability. I fished with him at the Spring Valley MWC event last year and sang his praises then. It was funny because the bowmount was on the fritz and the only way he could control it was by hand! He waS still able to keep us over the fish despite this challenge and we barely missed cashing a check. I have fished with alot of fishermen and few could consistently keep up with Rich on the river. I predict we will be seeing a;ot more of Rich Stadler in the professional fishing world.

Thanks for the compliments guys though I don't feel worthy of the praise. I also want to say thanks to Walleye First for giving me the opportunity. As far as your question Big Grass, I will tip the jigs with just livebait or a plastic-livebait combination. One thing to remember is that fish like a variety of different offerings. When you are in a large pack of boats that are all using the same type of bait, mix it up and use a different type of minnow or a different type of bait all together. I always have crawlers with me at Spring Valley. After a couple passes the bite usually slows so I tip my jig with a crawler instead of a fathead and will usually catch a few more. Let me know if you have any more questions.

How is it those saugers can grab my bait and when I set the hook, all I get is a bait cleaned jig?

And this even happened with stinger hooks!

It happens to everyone Rick. Some more than others. When you have fish biting light it is because of one of two reasons. The first is that the fish don't particularily like your offering. The second is that the fish are not in the feeding mode. Finding what the fish want is the first thing to try to do. After you have exhausted your options and have dealt with the fact that the fish are not feeding, then it is time to focus. You have to be very aware when lifting and dropping your rod. You should know exactly where your jig is in relation to the bottom. You should be able to anticipate the changes in depth by watching your locator. Then when your jig stops and inch above where it is supposed to you know not to lift the rod in the normal motion. Being able to stop the rod in an instant is an ability that comes after a lot of practice. The guys that don't stop and give the fish to much pressure will certainly lose a fish that does not thave the hook in its mouth. If you are able to then you need to put a tiny amount of pressure on the fish. It then becomes a waiting game. When the fish moves your jig into its mouth you will be able to feel a mild thump. Sometimes it will take a long time for this to happen. The trick is to still be controlling your boat to stay directly over that fish. Once you feel the thump, set the hook. I almost never use stinger hooks and I have a very high hook-up ratio. I think the stinger costs you more fish than it saves especially if there is alot of debris on the bottom. Repeating what I said earlier, if those fish were light biting your fatheads and you switched to crawlers or even a different type of minnow, they might have been more eager to inhale the bait. I will always pursue that option first. I hope that helps.

Wow, it's like Rich is in my boat again.

Good reading, Rich. I had the good fortune to fish a day with Rich last year, and learned an awful lot from him. Very easy going guy, he is a wealth of information on location, presentation, boat control, and, well, you name it, and you could probably learn something from Rich. If you ever get an opportunity to spend some boat time with him, jump at the chance. You won't regret it.
