![]() Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I kinda barrowed this topic from another board I visit. I thought it was a good topic to kick around. I can see however that it might spawn some heated debate, being we are all in love with the gear we all personally choose and use, and ultimatley depend on. My likes and dis-likes about the products I mention, only comes from my own personal experience with them, and not intended to knock anybody elses choices or experiences with them. The thread asked everbody to list three fishing related things or items they thought were the worse and three the best fishing purchases or decisions they have ever made. Mine are listed below. Best.... 1. My brand new (this year) TR-1 Auto Pilot, teamed with the High Torque 8 horse Yamaha 4 stroke outboard. It allows me to successfully apply every trolling technique out there while using whatever presentation I want. 2. The (Saginaw Bay) C-map Chip feature on my Raytheon GPS. Nothing like knowing where you are in conjunction to all the reefs, drop off's and sand bars along with the depths around you, while fallowing their contours without closely watching numbers or waypoints on the screen. 3. The Twin Riviera Collapsible Planer Boards that I thought and heard were junk, until I personally modified them. They were in the water more this summer than were my Big Jon Otter Boats. 4. I just have to squeeze in another and probably the best purchase I ever made. My 18' Smokercraft Jet Boat, with the 90 Horse Yamaha Jet Drive outboard Motor. If this old girl disengaged from my trailer hitch tomorrw, and crashed into a million pieces along the highway, she wouldn't owe me a dime. Worst.... 1. The 10 Shakespere 8' ugly stick rods I bought for my charters. They still build a darn good/tuff rod, but the reel seats on 4 of them were defective. Replaced those 4, and 2 of the replacments were defective. You could only tighten them so far (just snug) and then they would jump threads. Went to the Parsons and Kavejck IM-6 walleye series 7 1/2 foot telescoping rods. They are awsome. 2. Ten Cabela's Digital LC Depth Master reels. You could not tighten the drags on any of them enough, as to "lock" the reels drag system up. I want, need and demand reels that do that in my business. Also, the glass cover over the digital readout fogged up in weather changing conditions and often the unit itself just failed to turn on, rendering useless the LC feature. Switched to Bass Pro's "Gold Cup" mechanical LC reels, problem solved. Two years of both personal and charter use and abuse, and they are still looking/operating great. 3. Paying a guy $180.00 to re-cover my large cusion that covers my motor box on my boat. Then finding out that my aunt would have done it (same way/same material) with her industrial sized sewing machine for $20.00. Edited by walleye express 10/11/2004 9:47 PM

Member Posts: 265 Location: Combined Locks, WI | Best and not in any order, just 4 things that come to mind. 1. Dave's Ka-Boom Baits 2. Survivor Live Well intake system 3. Teaming up with Todd Mueller for tournaments. 4. getting to know Bill and Matt Bobber. Worst 1. Fishing the Petenwell, Lost way to many cranks. I will go back knowing what I know now. It may be on the Best list next year. 2. not fishing enough with my brother in law, then trying to fish a tournament with him, and expecting to do well Jon Piette Edited by crestliner 10/9/2004 12:30 PM

Member Posts: 164 | Best decisions: 1 - Coming Onboard with Outdoors FIRST 2 - Covering the Great Outdoor Games for ESPN 3 - Anything to do with GULP. It smells pretty awful, but it sure works well. Worst: Can't really say I have a worst, all in all a very good year.

| Worst: 1. GL Loomis products, a few broken rods taught me not to buy from GL Loomis again. 2. Garmin fish finders; mine kept locking up as I would troll over shallow areas. 3. Most new Rapala Lures; seems like one hard hit by a Northern and they are in pieces. I should have bought something else. Best: 1. My Crestliner Fish Hawk; love that boat. 2. Fishing Lac Suel in Ontario. Never, ever will I again catch so many nice Northern and Walleye. 3, Buying a Lowrance Fish Finder and the stock. Both have done exceptionally well. | |||
