Member Posts: 2300 Location: Berlin | The wife and I are going to start looking for a new or barely used car. What deals are out there right now on new and what manufacturer? Any suggestions?? This will be my wife's car and we have three kids (10, 8 and 4 years old). It will need to get over 25mpg. Any help to narrow the search would be appreciated!

Member Posts: 625 Location: LaCrosse, WI | My wife got an 09 Pontiac Vibe and I was really impressed. It has a lot more room than you might think, and the motor has a lot more snap than I expected. We took it to Chicago and got just under 40mpg. She gets about 27mpg all purpose, but much better when she drives mostly highway miles. The back seats fold down flat, and so does the passenger seat so there is a ton of room in there when she takes all of her stuff scrapbooking. 4 adults can ride comfortably, you'd probably have to pile your kids in one to see how comfortable they are. It also has either 6 or 8 air bags. I highly recommend it. Edited by GNWC Rookie 7/6/2009 10:33 AM

Member Posts: 514 Location: Darboy USA | Since it will be a car or possibly small suv I would say look at all the foreign cars. I've owned Toyotas and Nissans and have zero complaints on either one. Great fuel economy, absolutely no maintenance issues and they run forever!! I have a Nissan Pathfinder for my work vehicle now and my lease is up at month end. I will be looking at Nissans, Toyotas, and Hondas for my next one. I put on 25,000 miles/year and never question the performance or reliability. Not to mention all these carmakers are in better financial shape than the U.S. ones and have better deals right now from what I am finding out. Now if it was a pickup you were looking for I'd say buy a Ford, but that's a different argument!! ![]()

Really?. All car makrs are down 35+%, and non of them are really what I would call better off financially. Unless you mean because the foreign companys are all subsidized for every single car they sell here by their government. Yes, GM and Chrysler are in Chapt 11 now, but I expect they will come out of it, and be stronger companies. Look at some of the vehicles they are building now. Some of the highest rated vehicles are coming from the US carmakers. Fusion, Taurus, Malibu, Buick Lucerne, Cadillac's. It's not that the Toyots'a and Datsuns have slipped, it;'s that the American cars have caught, and bypassed the perceprion of superior Japanese quality in the past several years.

Member Posts: 514 Location: Darboy USA | Shep, I meant that their are more financial deals to be had when looking at the foreign makers. I agree that the U.S. guys have made huge strides, but based on what I was being quoted for lease and buying deals in June, the lowest prices came from the foreign guys.

New brakes is the only thing we have to spend money on with this car and comparing it to the piece of junk saturn l300(we bought new) we owned prior to the toyota we are very extremely happy with it!

Member Posts: 1406 | CAMRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!Purely for resale, holds value better than any other car on the road! I sell mine just before they hit 100k miles and can still get 10 grand. I have always been a chevy man but 250-300k miles on a camry is normal without any major problems...Every Chevy or Chrysler I have owned "New" had major problems around 75k. 2 friends of mine just researched the economy cars and one chose the Prius the other the Honda the corolla was their second choice all three fit their needs and pricing was last on their list of needs. Chevy for trucks but I have been contemplating the new Toyota thanks to Walleye First hehe....... Good Luck Tyee Edited by tyee 7/6/2009 7:53 PM
