Member Posts: 16 | I'm starting out trolling for eyes and I'm looking for some opinions on which rod holders to go with. Are the rail mounts the way to go? I don't have a rails on my boat so I would have to add a couple of them into the final cost. So I am wondering if the flush mounts would better suit me. What brand would you recommend? Thanks, Jake

Member Posts: 265 Location: Lincolnshire, IL | I have RAMs on my boat, I have fished with the Folbes and it took a bit to get used to...having said that, if I was rigging another, I would probably go with the Folbes...

Member Posts: 1195 Location: Orland Park, IL | Rams are really nice. I went the cabelas route and mounted them. Fairly reasonable and pretty tough. I need two for the front specifically for 3 way pulling. I gonna give those Folbes a shot. Shep has good things to say about em.

Member Posts: 3899 | I used the Folbe's all last year, after trying them the year before in a couple other boats. What I like is they are strong, very adjustable, quick, and easy to use, once you get used to them. They don't have all those goofy line-catching points on them like the Rams. I hate those. They lock in to the bases, and will not work their way out, like the Scotty's do. I do a lot of trolling for muskies, too, and they are much stronger than the Ram's, Scotty's, Fish-On's and other plastic holders. They will not chew up your cork handles like the DownEasters. They have suface, flush, and rail mount bases available. I will never go back to Scotty's, Ram's, or DownEasters.

If your considering tube type, check out Anglers' Pals. They come in varying lengths.Removing rods from a 7.5 " tube is easier then from a 10" tube particularly when the rods are horizontal to the the water surface.I believe Ram only offers 10".Rods never accidentally come out of the tube when snagged or turning and the tubes never slip on the ball mount which can be tightened in any position or direction. The ball-socket and type assembly secure to the mount with a single bolt.I have heard of a bolt breaking but have never seen one break.I've had these holders on three boats since '85. Their Multi-mount for electronics is also superior.Your loc/gps stays put when running in the rough stuff.

Member Posts: 15 | I used scottys and Rams for years and then started doing some trolling for Muskie and switch to Down East rod holders. I love them. Strongest rod holder out there. I sprayed a rubberized coating on them (about 10 coats) and that eliminated any problems with cork. By the way... all rod holders will damage cork to some extent. I am NOT sponsored by anyone... so I am providing just a "USER" recommendation.
