 Member Posts: 2680 Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | My son Brian came over this morning to go on very rare (for us anyway's) fishing trip with me out in the bay. The wind of course tried to do it's best to cancel this rare trip for us, but we tucked in along the shorelines enough that only the wind itself played havoc with our trolling speeds and not so much interference from the wave action. But the wind did take my hat off on the way out and instead of my hat floating like most hats, mine sank like a rock and was gone before I could spin the boat around and retrieve it. O. K., I/we start off $10.00 in the hole. So the boy steers the boat while I put out one side and I'm starting to put out the other, when the outside Fire Perch rod gets a vicious slam. I grab the rod and this fish seems huge. All of a sudden the line goes slack. I reel in and the Fire Perch Bomber is gone and the line cut clean as a whistle. I figure Northern Pike for sure. O.K., Now $18.00 dollars in the hole. We fish for about 10 more minutes and the inside board goes and we land a nice 23 incher on a Chartreuse and Silver bomber. Then we have 2 more rips in the next hour or so but fail to hook up. Then we land another 23 incher on the C & S bomber. Then we decide to call it a day at 12:00 noon. One last troll up-wind and were gone. But before we go, yet another fish (I think Northern) hits the last Fire Perch Bomber I own every bit as hard as the first fish did, and cuts that line clean off just above the snap. So we end up with 2 decent walleyes that only cost me about $40.00 including both equipment and gas. But how does that saying go. "Four Hours spent with your only son" Priceless. I'm not a rich man by any means, and seldom if ever complain about the cost of doing what I love. I thought I'd use the bad equipment luck me and my son experienced today as a mimick comparison to that "Priceless" commercial. My son is 38 years old, has his own wife, life and son, and yes I wish we had more time to spend like today. And figleaf the cost. Edited by walleye express 11/12/2011 5:43 PM | ||

I called Franks yesterday to see about replacing the Fire Perch Bombers we lost. Seems my recent successfull posts and pictures about them on local sporting good store fishing reports boards and web sites has created a run on that particular color, so they were out. Got out my old/new Air Brush and did my first ever paint job on some cranks to try and duplicate the Fire Perch. They didn't turn out to bad. Larry I did the poor mans crankbait and spinner blade holder version. Cut some dowl rods into 6 inch pieces and sharpened one end. Drilled them out at the other end and glued in some small electrical aligator clips. The clips hold what your painting and you Poke the sharp end into whatever styrofoam you have available. My father always made sure to have some leftover KFC from the night before... rowing around some little lake, in the wooden boat we made, catching whatever... KFC... good memories... he turned 92 last week... I'm always a Jerky and Gatoraide guy. With my OCD concerning my boat, I hate anything that get crumbs on the carpet. My son brian brought along some home made jerky from my 11 year old granbdsons first bow-shot deer. A little on the salty side, but I loved it. Edited by walleye express 11/16/2011 8:09 AM | ||

Erie Walleye seem to prefer the regular size. That makes sense Jim. I'm always afraid to throw on the #18 Rapala's. But often do when night fishing in the spring to throw a bigger profile during full moons. I hurts when pike get those because some of the colors I like and use Rapala don't make any more in that size. Pearl/Chartreuse Top and Gold/Orange Top. By the way here's some No-Names I painted up today. Bomber look-a-likes from JannsNetcraft. Pretty cheap. Might toss them out next to my painted Fire Perch versions this Saturday.
