Location: Rhinelander
James Keller and Travis Dittman lead the Oconto MWC with 31-12, 4 pounds 12 ounces ahead of James Petersen and Greg Josephs.

The bite was reportedly off from practice today as many of the teams reported smaller fish and fewer opportunities than as recently as yesterday. No one is saying much about the methods used, but standard techniques for the Bay seem to be in play.

Kopcok and Kopcok are in third with 26-04, Paulsen and Hynes in fourth with 26-02, and Morris and Breuer round out the top five.

WalleyeFIRST Coverage of the MWC is brought to you by Lund Boats and Mercury Marine.

Steve,
I heard that they are allowed to keep 8 and weigh 5 BUT are supposed to release all but top 5 before coming in. Iwas told DNR permit stipulated this. Can you double check this rule while you are there? If true, this woud save on delayed fish mortality but is the closest to culling that I know in walleye fishing in Wisconsin.( My understanding is that Wisconsin law says once in livewell the fish can not be released later. )

Im guessing The above rule and limited boundary for tournament are there to prevent fish mortality. Anyone else have a guess?

This is from the regs...
It is illegal:
• to sort fish. Any fish you take into possession which you do not release immediately is part of your daily bag limit even if it is released later.

I hate to be the guy, but I will be. What differs from the "8 in the livewell but weigh in 5, and release the other 3 before coming to harbor?"

They sound exactly the same except they have restricted the tournament to 8 for 2 guys instead of 10.

Does not sound like culling 1 bit. If you are a cheater, then you will cull no matter what the rules say.

Stacker,
If I interpret your message correctly, we are on the same page. If you are a cheater you will cheat regardless. If this ruling is verified as correct, I am all in favor of it. If DNR allowed me to release 3 fish before making a 25 mile run, I think I saved some undue stress on the released fish and kept them in their natural habitat. I will also assume that the permit restricted them as to where they fished. Again, the intent makes sense to avoid longer runs with 8 fish in live well. If all of this is true, I applaud the DNR for trying new procedures for a healthier fishery. Just makes sense, at least to me.

On another note, I think the MWC rule on 2 rods is stupid. Never liked it when I did the FLW national tour events. The rule keeps you longer on the water thus keeps fish longer in the livewell. Kind of contradicts the intent of above, doesn't it?

I think we are on the same page, no doubt, however, I think the tournament director accepted what could have been all along. Meaning, the DNR has had the rule written like this for a long time. Tournament directors could have used it like it seems to be spelled out for the MWC a long time ago, and did not. The DNR finally stepped in and forced the use of it. Of course, the DNR could do better by allowing culling for everyone and not just the bass tournaments.

Minimizing time on the water by using more rods? Com'on man, really? weigh 5 fish, keep 8. number 8 goes in well, you are done. pick out the 5 biggest, throw 3 littlers back, and go to weigh in. I to have fish many tournaments, how many could you have upgraded 3 fish in? few, few indeed.

Healthy fishery! Dude, the size aint what it was in the 90's but there are way more fish and people are expoiting them to no end. And there are more every year. Tournaments only did one thing to this fishery, showed everyone where they were and how to catch them. We dont kill fish.

Wisconsin Wade was nice enough to share A link to the rule. Stacker can you reference this rule that has always been in place? A link would be nice. Just like old times. Getting into a debate with Stacker and Tyee. I'll sit back and watch this one. Lol

Just like any other derby, if you don't like it don't fish it. If you don't fish it, don't piss and moan about it.

This is whatI found on the DNR web site:

The DNR may:

Restrict the area that may be fished by tournament anglers to reduce the time that fish are held in live-wells and the distance fish are transported to a weigh-in site;
DNR consistently restricts the distance tournament anglers can travel in catch-hold-release tournaments targeting bass, walleye, and muskellunge, particularly on large bodies of water like the Mississippi River and Green Bay
Require redistribution of released fish;
Most catch-hold-release tournaments have excellent release practices that do everything to ensure fish are released safely however DNR will add specific release guidelines if warranted
Reduce the daily bag limit (e.g., from the first Saturday in July until the second Saturday in August bass daily bag limits are set at 3 and from the second Saturday in June until the first Sunday in September walleye daily bag limits are set at 3)
Post-release mortality increases exponentially with water temperatures therefore the DNR reduces the daily bag limit to 3 fish for tournaments that fall within this warm water period
