Member Posts: 64 Location: Winneconne | I know what you mean, some people just dont know any better i guess. a buddy and i sat on his dock tonight on Lake Winneconne, and between the 2 of us, we caught well over 40 walleyes, but only 4 large enough(14.5"+), to be considered "keepers". granted, the smaller fish are better eating, but if you want a fillet that small, go perch fishing, and leave the 10-13" walleyes in the lake to grow up to be something in its life, like a bigger meal....lol

I am afraid it may be like 3 years ago. Any one with a boat ,was lined up along shore in the evening slaying those little fish and keeping them. I have the same frustration as you when I see this.

Member Posts: 617 Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | Don't keep big fish. Don't keep little fish. Don't hold so many tournaments. Don't drive so fast. Don't play with live electrical wires. Some of you guys won't let us have ANY fun. There is nothing wrong with harvesting fish. 'Bago has gone without a size limit now for nearly a decade and IMHO, the fishing is as good now as it has been since I started fishing the system 15 years ago. Personally, I won't keep any fish less than 13 or longer than 18, but that's my choice. I have NO desire to tell anyone else what they should harvest. When I hear the DNR biologists are concerned, I might change my tune. Until then, "Don't talk, and carry whatever size fish you want."

Member Posts: 1406 | Thanks brad! I'm so tired of this internet crap about who does what/what is wrong. For me the internet was/is a tool to learn, How bout you guys that are catching them with slip bobbers telling us how you rigged your set up so we can go out and enjoy that success as well, Now thats information I can use! Good Luck Tyee

Member Posts: 1656 | WHAT? You threw back those 10-13" "eaters"? Are you insane? hehehe I agree, let people harvest the fish, I've always felt it was better to let people harvest the small fish that are in such abundance and take the pressure off the bigger fish. If they were all 20-23" fish it might be a different story. Live and let eat.

Oh I don't know Tyee. If no one said anything about it, some would have no conscience. By someone sharing their thoughts, someone may think a little before keeping "a big perch". To me, I don't get too excited until the greed sets in, as it often can and does when LOTS of little fish are biting.

Point blank, it's not illegal. And yes, it's your opinion to state otherwise, but it's not illegal, so people can continue to catch, eat, or release any size walleye they want. Ethically is it right? Well, depends on who's ethics you go by. Do as you will.

Member Posts: 87 Location: Neenah, WI | Tyee, I'll post a report. I was out there Sunday. 1/16th oz. jig with a half crawler dragged SLOWLY on bottom outfished the slip bobbers 7 to 1 on the fish I caught over 14". Seems all the small ones under 13" liked the slip bobbers.

Member Posts: 1406 | hahahaha Dominic! Now that's entertainment....the real purpose of the internet! I hate slip bobbers like Dominic said all you get are the greedy little fish, Maybe thats why I don't use them, I'll drag a jig in the river anyday over fishing in crowds for "little" fish! Good Luck Tyee

New User Posts: 3 Location: Sherwood Wisconsin | I don't keep a walleye unless it's 15", but why people keep 10-12 inch fish? Well, because they can, and if the law says you can, people will always be there to use their right. A few years back they were killing 10" ers in the upper fox and the DNR had to step in and put some physical limits in. I guess all we can do is stress the importance of making quality, educated decisions (for the future) but it will not stop those that do have the right to. As a side note, I thought it was a very cool artical in the latest walleye insider about Erie over the last 20 years. Basically they have enough data now that proves that if they could have only set some limits on some of the larger fish (which only amounted to saving about 2-3% of those bigger fish) that based on their success rates over the years that the fishery would now be even better than what it is today. That says a mouthful.

It may be legal to keep those little candy bars, but how many law-abiding fishermen only have a max of twice their daily bag limit in the freezer. Last time I checked any more than that was illegal. Every year I hear of a few guys that had to throw fish in the garbage to make room for this years catch. ![]()
