Location: LaCrosse, WI | I made a promise to post some Petenwell reports on here. Here's a report from Saturday.
I started out the morning trolling cranks along the river bed with only a few shorts to show for my effort. After about an hour of that, I made the move to a shallow stump field (3-6') and ended up running into a few decent Eyes. The catfish were hitting cranks like I've never seen before. I caught 7 of them on cranks (all channel cats in the 3-5lb range). Man can those cats take a board back.
Also hitting cranks were a few crappies. If you've never caught any of those slab Petenwell crappies, you're missing out. Finally afer a few hours of that and only 3 legal Walleyes plus one 22" that was over the slot it was time to change again. I started working some breaklines with a three way rig and a minnow. I had several hits with nothing to show for it except one more 17" eye. I think I may have run into a school of shorts that couldn't get the whole minnow in.
The bite is decent, I just chose to try a few different techniques just to see what was working. |
