Subject: Where are the Eyes in the Fall?

It seems that every year the reports for Winnebago sort of drown out as September comes. My question is why? I know many people stop fishing and start hunting, but there must still be people that are consistantly catching fish. I have never had the chance to fish the lake in the fall for more than one outing at a time, since I am in college 3 hours away. All the articles say that fall is the time of year to catch the big eyes, as they feed up for the winter. I never hear of big eyes being caught out of Bago this time of year. Does anyone have any insight on what happens to this incredible fishery during the fall months? Some say that the fish begin stacking near the mouth of the river for the spring run, but then would'nt they be really easy to locate?

Hopefully after college I will be able to hit the lake hard in the fall and develop my own patterns. I guess I am just looking for any information on what happens with the fish, and why they are tough to catch. Thanks Guys!

Musky, Many people have different perceptions on this. I will tell you though that after spending 20 years on this system that I believe there is so much feed out there it's tough to get anything going as the yoy (year of young) are perfect feeding size this time of year. They tend to feed in the shallows at night, many run up the lakes and into the river in the fall but the water level is quite low this year and your assumptions on the mouth would be a pretty good bet as Ice fishing out there has gotten better the past couple of years. Weather will play a big part of your success.
