Location: Gladstone, Michigan 49837 | with water temps. varying between the upper 40's to middle 50's this past week in reverse order as "opening-day" we started with warmer water and the past weeks rain and cold, north winds dropping the surface temps. The upcoming weeks forecast has warm weather and changing winds; The past weeks catch in our boat has showed all walleye's completely spawned out and settling into their early spring/summer patterns of feeding on small shiner minnows as well seeing some wigglers being spit up in the livewell or when uphooking undersize fish.
Also are seeing some new weed growths sprouting up along the breakline edges and Bay areas. These newly forming weedbeds will also hold fish as they will be searching for food!
We've been covering water depths from the shallow flats of the upper Bay to water depths to 40 feet of water.
We've had various size classes of fish from many undersize walleye to some nice keeper fish up to 22 inches.
Best boat presentations and drifting using drift bags and positioning along edges using your electric motors.
Best presentations starting with using Walleye's Choice floaters with a 1/2 piece of crawler, leech and even small-sized fathead minnows, snell length variances from 18 to 48 inches (although with the rougher water conditions, longer giving the floater more bounce)
3/4 ounce slip-sinkers as well using bottom-bouncers to 1 ounce.
Another presentations and dragging and vertically fishing 1/4 to 3/8 ths. leadhead jigs tipping them.
We've experimented somewhat this week using the artificals like Berkley "Glup" but seeing a better bite with the real crawlers and live-bait as of right now.
Best fishing times seeming to be for sure an AM and early PM bite just before dark but with the wind-action fisherman have been catching fish throughout the day.
As of this report winds are still pushing from the north but with bright sunny skies we should see an improvement in bites throughout the Bay.
Keep in touch anglers we've got a long upcoming season ahead of us with some good bites!
