I sat at the intersection at 4:30 today trying to make a decision... Bago, Bay of GB or Poygan. Looked at the nice West, Southwest wind and went West to Poygan. Beautiful morning on the water. Ran South shore in 8-9 feet of water from West end to the cane beds. Caught 10 Walleyes, all 16-17 inches on my first pass (3 miles long) and a bunch of sheephead plus 7 Catfish. Ran Hollywood #5 Flickershads 40-50 back on 14/6 Fireline @ 1.7-1.8 mph. I started out with 3 different colors of Flickershads and Shadraps, but soon switched all to Hollywood, it was the hot bait today. If your looking for a nice bunch of 15-17 inch fish, Give Poygan a try. Water temp today was 75-76 degrees.

I was too lazy to remove my Harnesses from my linecounters spooled with 10# XT so I used my linecounter spooled with Fireline, and once again, I was reminded as to why I don't use my fireline rods to troll with small crankbaits and short lines....I lost a lot of fish today on the Fireline, but it sure is fun to watch my medium Church boards act like a bobber when a fish hits.

I was faced with the same decision over the weekend poygan, winnie, the bay. or salmon. We are truly blessed with the quality fisheries we have near the valley. Just wish I was blessed with the fortune of having enough time to enjoy them all.

Thanks for the Report

How many feet of 10#XT equal 40-50' of 14/6??? Precision Trolling Bible describes how to go from the 10# standard to Fireline but I haven't figured out how to calculate that in reverse. Thanks for all of your detailed reports PS! and thanks in advance to anyone with the formula going from Fireline to 10#XT.

Ran Poygan again today, lots of wind to contend with. Ran same pattern as last couple of trips. 3 Walleyes within the first 10 minutes and then our trip was cut short.... someone in the boat, became a little seasick so we headed in right away.
I forgot how used to fishing in rough water I have become, both my passengers were turning green by the time we ran all the way back to the dock.

Be out all next week again.

Help me out here. I have a place on Lake Poygan and on Sunday I went to end of my dock and noticed about a 16" drop in water depth. I can see the bottom of my boat lift. Did the strong winds we just had the last couple of days push the water out of this lake or did the Corps drain it down?

It is the wind. Amazing what it can do to water levels. There is still plenty of water coming into the upper lakes right now.

Hi there Walleyeralph! I almost left one out there for you on Saturday. Something big took my board under but then came unhooked. There were only a couple other boats out there Saturday morning when I got there between 6:30 and 7. Caught 3 fairly quickly and then the wind picked up some and made a slight turn from the West to the North/West and they just shut down for me. I blamed it on the wind change and the increased cloud cover but it sounds like others kept on catching.

P.S.- do you tip your flicker shads with 1/2 crawlers or do you run them as they are?

Thanks,
Mark

If you know how to jig.... and I don't... Bago, West shore reefs around Garlic have been loaded with boats, I have not been able to put together 3 days in a row on Bago trolling. There are a lot of better sticks fishing bago that are having better days than me, but I have not recently. If your looking for 15-17 inch fish and an easy consistant place to catch Walleyes, Poygan or Clarks bay. Flicker shads on Poygan anywhere in 8 feet of water, Harnesses on Clarks bay on Winneconnie.

Thank you! I always stubbornly cling to trolling as long as I can so I will go to Poygan. I would like to troll the mud on Bago but it has been very inconsistent for me this year also. Years ago I gave up on Poygan by early July because the bite had either slowed or the floating vegetation was too frustrating. Thanks again.

Was out with my brother today. Jigged west end with no luck. Trolled east to west in the horseshoe and we FINALLY busted my boat's cherry! We caught 9 eyes ranging from 13-1/2" to 18-1/2", one 8" perch, and 2- 10" crappies. Most were caught on #7 Flicker Shads (Hollywood... I'm a believer!), the magic let back was 20' behind the board, roughly 1.6 to 1.8 MPH. The horseshoe was loaded with boats in the morning but ironically all of our fish came after 1:00PM when everone scattered. There were maybe a dozen boats out there with us. We also saw what had to be a 40" plus northern sunning itself on the surface about 5 feet from the boat... just a monster.

The other thing that I thought odd was the walleyes were super aggressive, especially the larger fish. Pulling boards underwater, pulling really hard, and 3 of them were jumping out of the water like a bass or pike would. Never saw that happen before! All-in-all, a nice day on the water. Thanks to Purple Skeeter for tuning me into the Flicker Shad program on Poygan!

Calm wind water temp 81 degrees

Had a great trip today with 4 retired Plumbers from a fishing trip my business partner and I gave away last fall. 2 separate boats and we ran south shore today, 40 back and Walleye colored #5 Shads & Perch Salmo Hornets were the ticket, and between the 2 of us we put 30 Walleyes, a dozen or so Crappies, too many catfish and Sheephead to boot. Calm weather made the bugs a challenge to deal with, but the action kept our guests busy all day long. For me, the last time out black/gold #5 Flicker was the ticket, today, did not get a fish. Hollywood #5 Flicker Shad took 1 Walleye and most of our Crappies; Walleye Shad took 75% of our Walleyes today. Speed was a little slower today @ 1.6 in our boat. 17 of our 20 were between 15-19 inches with 3 dinks in the bunch.

Wind, Southeast 10-15 mph , Water temp 78

Hit the water today @ 1:00 and caught 6 on 2 passes including a 25+ (released) Also caught 10+ Whitebass, no sheeps and my 3rd Gar of the year. Got chased and I mean chased off the water by a nasty storm @ 4 pm. Walleye shad#5 40 back, 1.6 mph. caught everything. Nothing on Steel blue, Black gold flicker shads or Hollywood. I have 40 #5 Black/Gold Flicker shads @ $2.00 each if anyone needs any. pm me and I'll get them to you.

I have to work all next week so I won't be back on the water for 5 days... bummer.

On average, I will get one every trip out trolling for Walleyes and I usually lose 1 bait every trip to one of those toothy creatures, but I have never fished for them directly. There are 2 spots along the south shore where the breaks extend out from the shore, that is where I have gotten mine over the years. I saw some guys on Sunday that were trolling right down the middle of the lake at 3-4 miles an hour trolling for pike, I saw them hookup and net 2 nice northerns in 30 minutes. Big baits and fast trolling.

When I was a kid, we used to cast big dare devils and cleos on Little Lake in the Spring on the North end of the lake for a couple of weeks when the Big northerns would swim up the creek to spawn.

I'm sure someone on here who knows how to fish northerns will offer their advice!, If not, I'll pick you up at the dock and we'll throw everything I got in my tackle box till we get something to bite!

I was out on Poygan with a buddy last Tuesday. He stayed in the Indian point area most of the day. I tried to get him to move west where it wasn't so rough but he had a report from another guy we know so we stayed in that area. Three eaters and a couple of dinks all day. Tried just about every color / size in the box. The crappies were more cooperative than the eyes. Also caught a gar.

My favorite setup for muskie and big northerns is an Ambassadeur 6500C on a 7foot rod with 50pound test Power-Pro and a 100pound test flourocarbon leader. My favorite lure is a Johnson Silver Minnow with a huge twister tail. The big Mepps Muskie Killer spinners are also a good choice. The Silver Minnows are nice because you can work them through the slop without hanging too many weeds or you can raise your rod tip and work them back on top with that big twister tail beating the surface. Dardevles are nice if you don't have too many weeds to contend with. Time to go! Later!

My last post was written in a hurry just before leaving work and I didn't comment on trolling for northerns. I like to use Mirrolure15M's, 111's, 112's and 113's and large (#18?) jointed Rapalas. Lures with a lot of orange always seemed to be the go to for color. I've done a lot of trolling for northerns during the fall, mostly on Lake Marmion north of Atikokan Ontario. With fuel prices the way they are I'm sticking closer to home this year.

Mirrolure 112's are discontinued. You may be able to find them and the others on ebay. I picked up some real bargains lately.
