What a Beautful morning!

The sun broke over the horizon into a beautiful, cool morning. Winds were almost nothing and the bay looked like a sheet of sparkling diamonds with nary a ripple.

Some 200 plus boats filled the harbor and staging area as anglers anxiously awaited the send off to start the days competition.

Many anglers were busily completeing the tasks of tieing lines, setting up rigs and pouring over maps. To retie ones lines is a necesity with the ever prevalent Zebra mussels that abound in the bay.

Fishing reports have been spotty and tales of a consistent pattern being elusive filled the air. Much talk about the abundance of alwives and Mayflies and their effect on the fish was also bantered about.

We will see just how willing the walleye are as the weigh in begins at 3pm in Memorial Park, on the lakefornt in Mewnominee. Plan ahead as the Bay Jammer event is also this weekend and parking may be at a premium.

Well, the weigh in is done and all the fish have been brought to the scales. The duo of Brad and Kurt Knoll lead the field at the end of day 1 with a whopping 37.16lb. limit of fish!

As anticipated there were many larger fish today, including a beautiful 9.59lb eye brought in by Jay Walsh and Dennis Robinson. Though that was the pair’s only fish of the day, it sure made for smiles all around. The pair commented that these were the kinds of fish they were catching all week, but only one or two of them each day.

Several anglers told of how the big fish seemed elusive. And many consider the abundant forage of Shad, Alewife and Mayfly to be a contributing factor in the walleyes refusal to bite.

Though not all anglers had a problem catching fish. Dennis Skurulsky and Eric Skell brought their 5 fish limit to the scales almost 2 hours early. I actually met up with the pair at the local Holiday gas station; we were both on our way back down to the weigh in! Their 18.13lb, 5 fish limit came early. "Culling is illegal and we had our fish, so we came in", commented Dennis.

Anglers today offered a mixed bag of conditions they hoped would aid them in tomorrow’s fishing. Some anglers wanted more wind, some didn't want the wind to change. Some planned to make great runs to the far ends of the bay and others had a closer strategy in mind.

Tomorrow the wind is set to blow, and we shall see who comes out on top.

Also, a big "WELL DONE" to the MWC Staff, John Kukuk, Rick Estebo and the entire crew of the M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen. What an awesome job on the first day, and an almost miserable hot one at that, of their first ever MWC event.

"We had a few logistics snags and a few things we had to adapt to, but all in all it went very well. The anglers were super and the crew worked their tails off", said Rick Estebo. "Tomorrow were gonna have fun, we're ready."

Rounding out the top 10 are
1) Brad Knoll/Kurt Knoll - 37.16
2) Kevin Dahlhauser/David Koller - 30.99
3) Dean Arnoldussen/Tom Keenan - 29.04
4) Bradley Gunville/Hank DeClark- 27.30
5) Jeff Russell/Doug Lampen - 26.59
6) Dan Zwick/Tony Kobriger - 26.40
7) Randy Carroll/Ed Klein - 26.11
8) Dale Howard/John Geiger - 25.59
9) Gregg Erdmann/John Schneider - 23.94
10) Kevin LeBoeuf/Jeff Iverson - 23.41

The top 3 big fish were brought in by-
1) Jay Walsh and Dennis Robinson - 9.59lbs.
2) Tony Dowiatt/Matt Dowiatt - 8.96lbs.
3) Kevin McQuoid/Karen McQuuoid - 8.75lbs.

Well, as promised day two of the 2005 Menominee MI MWC was as beautiful as the first! Light wind and mild temps greeted anglers as they set out in search of a limit.

Once again, the launch crew did a great job of gettin all the boats in the water and inspected well on time for the start.

Today, many boats ran to the south, where it is rumored the cooperative fish are hanging out.

The weigh in Begins at 3pm in Memorial Park on 1st street in Menominee, see you there?

Knoll and Knoll hang on to the 1st place spot and win the 2005 MWC event on Green Bay! More than that, in a shootout down to the wire, Dahlhauser and Koller hang on to their 2nd place spot from Saturday. Even with Dahlhauser and Koller bringing in a larger basket of fish on Sunday!

But wait!

It is not often an angler or team holds the lead from Saturday to Sunday, and it is rare for the top two to do this, has that ever been done before? And to have each of the top two bring in increasingly heaevy weights? It was a shootout to the end and a thrilling finish to an awesome event!

Knoll and Knoll used crawler harnesses in red and firetiger colors, behind 3/4 oz bottom bouncers in 20 feet of water, off Geanos Reef. Today the pair only had a few fish in their boat when the MWC camera crew was there, but caught their best fish this afternoon. "The change was when we moved the spinners up in the afternoon," said Brad.

The duo shortened up the distance behind the boards and ran the bottom bouncer/spinners 20 feet behind the board to get the offering to run at approximately 10 feet deep, over 20 feet of water. "It was flat calm and the fish seemed to move up, so we moved up the spinners." The Knoll's also stated that they trolled slowly, with direction not mattering much, at speeds between 1.0 and 1.2mph.

It was enough to get the job done and net the duo $25,000.00 for their efforts, and it was their first win!

Also of note, and no small achievement, Kim Papineau "Chief" and Jay Janny earned the title of MWC Central Division Team of the Year! Jay and Cheif brought the heaviest weight of the day to the scales at 37.66, which was also the biggest one day basket of the tournament.

Matt and Bill Bobber are the 2005 Father and Son Team of the Year and Husband and Wife Team of the Year go to Ron and Vickie Goldapske. Congratulations to all, in well earned victories!

The top 10 teams are-
1) Brad Knoll/Kurt Knoll - 64.23 lbs.
2) Kevin Dahlhauser/David Koller - 60.17 lbs.
3) Doug Lampen/Jeff Russel - 57.43 lbs.
4) Dean Arnoldussen/Tom Keenan - 55.76 lbs.
5) Jim Preissner/Rodney York - 55.72 lbs.
6) Wayne Butz/Don Frederick - 51.43 lbs.
7) Joe Jensen/Harlan Perron - 51.30 lbs.
8) John Geiger/Dale Howard - 48.64 lbs.
9) William Vojak/John Ziether - 48.62 lbs.
10) John Durand/Tom Kemos - 48.08 lbs.

And the top 3 big fish are -
1) Gordan Rabetski/Joe Hackett - 9.50 lbs.
2) Jay Janny/Chief Papineau - 9.31 lbs.
3) Patrick Neu/Alex Neu - 8.85 lbs.

On a more personal note,

A big round of applause for the crew that made this all run so well. From the MWC and their cast of regulars to the M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen to John Kukuk and Rick Estebo and the entire communities of Menominee and Marinette!!!

The M&M Great Lakes Sport Fishermen had a whole host of volunteers who worked their backsides off to make this happen, without enough volunteers it is tough to run such a large event.

Again, my Hat is off to the crew from my hometown(s)!!

This will be final, official entry on this event.

We did not set up a leaderboard as you all may know. But we were there and covered the event extensively.

I guess i disagree with the coverage. The pics are nice even though you have multiply images of same poeple and it took 2 days to get complete results posted. I would have like to have seen the top5 teams maybe 10 with a brief comment and how they caught there fish that would be considerd great coverage in my humble opinion.

Posted the 17th at 5:44 PM, same day as the event. If you are looking for how the 5th place team caught their fish, that's not likely to be a very hot story or discussed onstage much if at all. The photo albums were up same day, with hundreds of pictures. Not too bad at all, IMHO. As Ralph noted, we did not set up a leaderboard for this event. We do cover some MWC events, and will be at the Championship with full coverage. I believe the totals were linked same day as they were available, so that's that.

I think Ralph did a great job with the coverage. If I wanted to know more about any of the tournements WF covers I'd have gotten off my duff and drove there. Even then you would have a hard time finding out the winning tactics and locations at some tournements.

You also have to remember these guys have jobs and a family they are committed to besides the web site. You have all this information and walleye news right at your finger tips, be thankfull.

No Fish, great coverage, I wish I would have known you were there, would have loved to meet up with ya.

Steve, I don't know what eye lunker is refering to but I was looking for "On The Spot" coverage like I had seen in the past, what Ralph got up was pretty good info and for the most part accurate.

It was interesting as I drove to the event myself to get the "scoop" first hand. I found it very intriguing that MWC did not have a board of any kind up to see how people were dropping or climbing. (very disturbing) even contestants were getting better coverage from friends at home off the net leaderboards which WF did not partake in! Technology is a great thing but if it does not progress you loose your audience!

For those that fished, congrats, and Sunshine, I do do windows! Great finish for your first MWC event. Hope to see you at many more!
Good Luck

Sworral i read the report when it came out and the knoll brothers are the only ones quoted as what they where doing. It was basic report they gave and how they won it but it was all I wanted to hear. Why not include some more for the entertainment of reading and for us avid fisherman that have wife and family and work and didnt have a chance to sit on my duff for 4 hours of driving and to sit on my duff with a cold one in hand watching the weight-in? Why not have some quick interviews with a few of the top 15 they all had good weights.Maybe randomly pick 5 or 6 out of the top 15 and get a few more quick qoutes like the knolls . Ralph nice job on the pictures i did not see all of them the first time a looked. My apologies on that. Just alittle constructive criticim for future mwc's the oldest running and to some the most prestigoues walleye tournament out there! .Also no live leaderboard would have been nice . I'm sorry if this ruffled a few feather but in no way was my post meant to minimize how much i appreciate walleye first.

Being I was there I will tell you that the brothers were shocked and very soft spoken, what you read was about all they sad! Hard to make up something for them! Other on stage interveiws were very short! No one cares about who finished 2nd (as the old saying goes) lol.

If you want to know more just ask here, there are many guys that fished the event on this site!

There are very good reasons we don't do full coverage of all MWC events, not the least of which is the fact a competitor of ours is a listed Sponsor of the MWC and is expected to give top shelf full coverage.

As a media source, we chose to offer limited MWC coverage this year. OutdoorsFIRST will be at the Championship, as we were last year. We produced top shelf coverage including video and LLB, photo and interview material, and will do so again this year.

Eyelunker,

I much appreciate the post. I look to the points you bring up as those to strive for improving.

We did not do a live leaderboard this time, so I had more time to take pictures and talk with anglers, even did a wee bit of helping out at the site.

It is very hard to take everyones pictures, and I am guilty of playing off a few that like to play off having their picture taken. Chris and Gina as well as Dennis and Eric are very aware of a camera being on them and play to it. You really should have seen Chris do his fish seeker dance. I spent time talking with anglers and asking to have hats tipped back, glasses off and to smile for the camera. Some do, some don't. Some pics just don't look good and they don't make it. Also pics on stage cannot be taken when pics at the dock are being taken. The goal is to do more than just the here is a guy on stage with a fish pic.

I uploaded a few pics and the info and quotes, then was called away for a family matter. I did upload them all ASAP. And many times, instead of writing our own press release after the event, an inclusion of the official press release, or a link to it, makes more sense than doing our own.

One thing I am changing, there is now a digital voice recorder that can interface with the computer for more interviews with contestants. That means more snippets and tips etc...

However, quotes, stories and pics will have this same factor. These guys and gals have a million things racing through their minds, especially on the last tournament of their season. Some teams leave right away, some don't want to talk and so on. How exciting is a quote like, "I don't want to tell the world where I was fishing", and how does that make the angler look to the public? And sadly, I cannot guess who someone wants to see or hear from, so to work with those that are willling and available is what happens.

Maybe one day we will have our own crew covering these events, but for now it is usually just one of us at a time as we cover practically everything, including events in the Musky world.

I appreciate the honesty of your thoughts and thanks again for the points to ponder.

Eyelunker - I had the good fortune of being able to fish the tournament out of Menominee this last weekend. I hadn't previously fished the bay before, what an experience. I fished as a fill in for Shink (hope the hand is doing well). I am a river fisherman and had never fished with crawler harnesses so this was a new experience for me. Luckily my fishing partner knew something about them. We were both green on this water but with a little help and guidance from other fisherman we were fortunate enough to narrow down an area that produced some fish. We fished the weeds in 9 1/2 foot of water off of Geano Reef. Our best producing setup was large silver hammer blades I think they were #8's. Six to eight foot snells with one or two split shots 35 ft. behind the board. We ended up in 43rd place with 31.67#'s of fish. When you fish a tournament all we can hope for is a chance and although we lost 3 fish over 5#'s Saturday, we still were pleased with our placement. We had a good time and still came close. I hope this is some information that you will find helpful. By the way, No Fish I wish I knew you were there I would have enjoyed the opportunity to chat.
