I've used both the Richter and Sea Spike and have had good luck with both. I have a 20' Warrior. You definitely need to let out enough line to get it to hold properly. Good luck.

John, do you use the 12# or 15# version? Do you use rope about 5x depth?

thanks

I use the 12 lb but with a bigger boat I would go with the bigger one. I use 50' of rope.

I am on the 4th season with mine. I love it. Works well with all bottom compositions, doesnt take up too much room, and the releqase is awesome. I would just get the 15# for all boats. The only drawback is they need alot of line out to hook up, but when they do you are stuck.

Another thing to have is a drop-n-stay. You wont need as much rope out. Been out with it on rivers and lakes and it works awsome.

I used a Richtor anchor( Thanks Jayman) with the Drop N Stay last fall at Moline for the first time. I used to use a big heavy Navy anchor. The Richtor held my Tuffy 1890 just fine, and with the Drop n Stay, I was able to use a lot less rope to hold the boat than I was before with the 25 lb Navy anchor.

I bought an eighteen pound Richter anchor last along with a Drop N Stay and it worked great. I now want to replace my second 28# Navy anchor and was considering dropping all the way down to a 14# Richter with the Drop N Stay. Do you think that dropping all the way to a 14# anchor is too aggressive? Or is it ok considering that it is aided by the Drop N Stay?

What diameter anchor rope is most common? My rope is so thick I can only get one wrap around my cleat. Not an issue anymore with D n S attachment system but it would help storage to have a thinner diameter rope. I forgot what diameter I bought but I think something thinner would make more sense. Any thoughts?

As stated before, get the Richter and a Drop-N-Stay. It holds on everything. I've had great success with the Ricther, But the Drop-n-Stay, turned my good anchor into a "Great" anchor.

I use the real soft poly rope. Easy on the hands, I think it's 3/8"? Maybe 1/2". I'll check tonight.

Thanks Jim. I dont think i have ever seen one of those before so i appreciate it. Also just wondering what you guys do to secure your anchors in the boat when travel on water. Any secrets that anyone uses to prevent anchor from damaging inside your boat storage.

Ritch, I store my anchors under the console seats......and then I drive I like a grampa.

Atleast when I know I'm going anchor fishing and have two anchors. If not and I just have one anchor. I keep it in a side storage compartment in the back and keep an extra lifejacket around the anchor.

I agree that Richter makes a great anchor.

As for rope, I used to go with the expensive stuff. 1/2" diameter from West Marine. It is on a roll and you buy it by the foot. It is pricy but holds up very well, is easy on the hands and has a good amount of stretch. One of the nice things about the Drop-n-Stay is the rope is not nearly as important as it used to be since now the stretch comes from the Drop-n-Stay.

As for storing the anchors, lets just say we have something in the mix we are working on.

Just purchased a Minn-Kota Deckhand 40 but no anchor yet. was wondering if the richter anchor would work with this set-up? Anyone tried it? Doesn't look like the drop and stay will though.

I mostly fish lakes.

You bet the Richter will work. Your right, the Drop-n-Stay won't. I am not even sure if there is a way to make one that would work with a deckhand. I will put some thought into it.

I put my anchor and line in a small blue tub I think I got at F&F a few years ago.
It sits under the seat on the passenger side. Slides around a bit, but not bad.
I have considered putting velcro on the bottom to slow it down, but it has been ok for all these years.
Take care,
Jim O

My understanding is that if I use the Richter anchor i will need to remove it from the Deckhand once it has been retrieved.

So basically the Deckhand can raise and lower the anchor but i have to attach and detach it every time.

Am I understanding correctly?

Steve

I am speculating that the deckhand is made for a mushroom anchor?
The size and spikes on the Richter would likely make a mess of your gunnel.
The potential of the spikes on the Richter smacking your boat once it clears the water would also be a concern to me.
Hope this helps,
