Member Posts: 160 Location: Menasha, WI | There are 3 tournaments I believe this coming weekend so please be patient at the ramps and help out any one you see who may need it. you just never know if you might need some help someday. I will be in the Brickyard fishing club Walleye Tournament, so I hope to see you there at the weigh in. This past weekend my partner and I fished in the Annual Otter Street tournament held at Menominee Park in Oshkosh. We had 8.06 pounds on day one and were in 75th place overall. On Day 2 we registered only 3.0 pounds of fish and slipped to 127th place overall. We had a total of 11.06 and it took over 16 pounds to cash a paycheck. We did catch a lot of fish however and it was a fun time. I am pretty sore today though from all the waves we took. It was kind of rough on both days and we were about 12 miles from the launch, so we had to make quit a run each day. We trolled and jigged various places on day one and had a limit of fish by 10 AM or so on day one. we then tried to upgrade our fish, but had not takers. On day two we trolled all day and did not have a fish until about 11:30 AM. We then hit a school of fish, but all but two were short and then we ran out of time. Congrats to all who fished the tournament and cashed a paycheck. So here is what I know from the past week......... The reefs are starting to heat up all over. We had a lot of fish from 13 to 20 inches this past week while using both leeches and crawlers on 1/16 oz. jigs. We have to bounce around a lot to find fish, but when you find them it is a lot of fun. slip bobbers were actually working for us too, but we found out that the smallmouth bass and sheeps really liked them better so we put them away. Trolling is producing fish near the humps and reefs. The mud bite is doing ok when the wind is calm, but once the wind picks up, it seems these fish quit biting. I expect the mud to heat up very soon, so look for some big fish in the near future. The rocky shorelines and weedy shorelines are doing well while casting cranks. I have had several reports of people casting cranks in Neenah and Menasha and catching nice sized fish. Most are using Flicker shads or Shad Raps and having some good success. The area near the Neenah Lighthouse is doing well for perch fishing. I am shocked at the size of these critters this year. We boated over 15 perch this weekend and all were from 10-12 inches. They are huge. We were walleye fishing on the reefs and these perch were a great thing to see for sure. I can hardly wait to get out there and get some for a tasty fish fry. Mansur Reef is producing fish while trolling around it with cranks. Stevens Reef has seen a lot of boats on it lately, so I have been avoiding it as much as possible. I try to avoid the crowds if at all possible. The east shore is very muddy right now from high cliff to south of Pipe. We tried to fish here several days last week and it was a no go. The best water quality seems to be the west shore from Oshkosh to Menasha. There is also a lot of debris floating on the lake right now, so use caution. The water levels are very high and it is making some of the boat launches very tricky to deal with. I suggest you bring a pair of shorts with you, as some of the ramps, you may have to walk into some water to launch. Just an FYI is all here. I talked to several people this week who were trolling Scootchie rigs and doing well for bigger size fish. The fish really seem to like the bigger profile of the Scootchie Rig, when harnesses were not producing. There has been a lot of boats around the Little blackbird Island area. I was through there two or three times this past week and most seem to be using slip bobbers with leeches and crawlers. One thing I have noticed this past week or so, is that crawlers were really out producing leeches for us. I really like to use both and found it odd that they did not want the leeches too often. The mouth of the Fox river is doing well while using bottom bouncers or pulling flies for bigger fish. There were a lot of people here this past weekend and I now know why. We should have been there for the tournament, but we chose a different route. (BUMMER) Gehrkes Reef is doing well, but there is a lot of people here and most are anchored using slip bobbers. Long Point is very hit and miss. One day we are getting fish, the next day we cannot buy a fish. The area in and around the Jesuit is doing well for trolling. There are a few humps near here that also are producing some nice fish. I was shocked to see perch, bluegills and walleyes on some of these humps. There was a few reports that came to me that this past week there has been some crappies caught while trolling and they were rather large also. I have not gotten a crappie trolling, but thought I would let you know in case you wanted to try it. We have been doing well trolling along the north shore in 16 feet of water. We have been in the area around the golf course. flicker Shads, shad Raps and Wally divers are working well. The whitebass have seemed to slow down and now the walleyes are here once again. We have been starting real slow, like 1.5 or so, and working our way up to 2.5 to see what they want. I also have seen several boats inside of the rocks on lighthouse reef. I hope you all know where you are going in there. It is very dangerous in there as the water level can be as little as a few inches in places. If you are going here, use caution, and I suggest using your bow mount. Overall, I would stay out of here! Just my two cents, I hope this helps you out and try and take a kid fishing. See you soon with another report! This is AXL.......I AM OUT! | ||
