Day one of the 2011 FLW Walleye Championship got underway as anglers sported their insulated bibs and boots. Many were still scraping frost from their windshields as they put in the Missouri River south of Bismarck, North Dakota this morning. It was chilly but much warmer temps are in the forecast and that is expected to improve the fishing drastically.

Lund/Mercury Pro, Ted Takasaki left the launch with confidence this morning, "I had several very productive days during practice and I expect my bite to only improve throughout the duration of the tournament. I'm keeping a realistic view however, this is a tremendous fishery and there will be lots of big fish caught for sure!"

There is no culling in North Dakota, so the anglers must put together the best five fish they can, based on the timing of their catches. All fish less than 14 inches must be immediately returned to the water alive, but without a slot limit there will be some giant fish brought to the scales this afternoon.

“I am excited to get to it,” Says The Reel Shot/J.J. Keller Fishing Team Member, John Schneider. “I had a productive practice and expect my pattern to only improve as the week goes on. This projected warm up will improve fishing for a lot of guys so I know not to count anyone out! The water levels are dropping, which typically mean poorer fishing, but in this river system the walleyes during this time of year, the walleyes are really tying on the feedbag! This is going to be a fun tournament!”

The weigh-ins will be held at 5 PM in downtown Bismarck at the Bismarck Civic Center. There is also an outdoor expo being held in the same place where folks are encouraged to spend some time talking to exhibitors, anglers, and enjoying product displays and demonstrations.

The Championship is a four-day event, so the final weigh-in will be on Sunday, September 25th. Watch for more updates this evening!

The Top 40 FLW Walleye Touring pros did not disappoint at the end of the first day of the 2011 Championship. Early estimates may have been high, but considering the constant changes the Missouri River system has encountered recently. Some thought a 40 lbs. bag was likely needed to win this event, and while that is very possible here, 30 pounds will be the new 40.

"I am very confident I will find the same quantity AND quality as I did today," says current leader with over 26 lbs, Keith Kavajecz. "For this event, I'm not sure I will be able to improve much on what I brought in today, and while that is always the hope, I will be very happy with a similar weight tomorrow. This river system has the big fish, but the fluctuating water levels is making things more difficult.

Kavajecz leads the pack by over five pounds, but its only day one. Too early for any speculations as this group of anglers is the best of the best in the walleye fishing world. What makes this tournament interesting is many of the hot spots are community locations that the anglers have to share with each other. The spot competition actually really separates the best anglers. Some do extremely well, while others struggle to find the quality of fish to stay in this thing.

Saturday the field will be cut down to the top 20 and Sunday it will be cut even further to the top 10 where the champion will be crowned. Regardless of the water conditions and weather, expect to continue to see great sacks of big NoDak walleyes.

Tomorrow's take off is scheduled for 8 AM and weigh-in at 5 PM same place.

Day One Top 10

1st Keith Kavajecz 26-12
2nd Chris Gilman 21-06
