| Can anyone suggest a general area/technique for someone new to the river to get started on? I have fished below the Dam for the last couple of years, but would like to go somewhere a little quieter. |

| If you want to learn this area from the absolute best your smartest move would be to join the Mississippi River Walleye Club. All nice guys, all great anglers.

| I have fished the dam area for quite a few years. If you want panfish you have to fish the snags, which are underwater trees either along the bank or in current. If you want catfish and drum fish the head of the cut. Walleyes and sauger can be found at the lock and by the fishing barge. I have also drifted with jig and minnow from the end of the lock wall down the bank to the plca where you get the ride out to the fishing barge. There's some rocks right in front of the restaurant that hold sauger. Downstream of the launch in Guttenberg there's a few wingdams on the right, cast for smallies here. Fishing really depends on the water level and the flow.
We do good with zip lures at the locks for walleyes and sauger. Look for schools of suspended crappies in the backwater channels and drift over them with minnows. This should give you a few options. Right now the water's very low and fishing is slow. |
