""bait choices and techniques for the Opener, May 1"

with most of the Walleye's through with their spawning activities the opening of this years Walleye season should be a very productive one. Finding fish throughout the upper Bay should find many good eaters. This post-spawn shows us that females will be less aggressive than males in the feeding mode.
Patterns will form and with the last days and upcoming days of warming temps. we'll also start to seeing new weed growths holding baitfish and attracting Walleye.
Water temps. running just above the 50' mark right now.
Bait choices for those opening days; definitely floater rigs (Walleye's Choice P-76-H), crawler harnesses (Walleye's Choice C-33, I-42) working them slowly over bottom structure using either bottom bouncers or egg sinkers working well also.
Tipping with crawler pieces and whole crawlers, actually on the single hooked floaters using small fathead minnows work well also.
Leeches too can take some early season fish right into June.

Jigging also will produce some nice fish this time of year; 1/8 to 3/8 ounce lead head jigs (orange, red, chartreuses) casted on the shallow reefs and through newly growing weeds, tipping with crawler pieces and minnows. Berkley "Gulp" has also been a good artifical substitute bait (3" crawler and Minnow Grub, pumpkinseed, green colors) catching numerous fish.

Casting crankbaits like Shad Rap and minnow style baits over the shallow flats and shorelines should also take fish.

Boat presentations and trolling, drifting and positioning with the electric motor keeps one looking and locating active biting fish and don't be afraid to anchor either. Many times these fish are moving around and you can set up on them.

PERCH, PERCH, they are still biting pretty well. Some good catches still being boated. Best baits; wigglers and small minnows.

All for today,
Marty
