I just talked to Sarah at NEWTC. One person dropped out today, and I signed up - still at 4 people. They will make a decision if they're going to hold the April class by tomorrow. The next scheduled class is 5/6-5/8.

There are a lot of guides on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Are they required to get this license also?

Yes, the Federal Navigable Waters include the Mississippi and tributaries. To guide on these waters, you must have a Limited OUPV license. Our Limited OUPV instructor told us there was a duck hunting guide that was nailed because he was guiding on the Mississippi River.

DOC--I JUST WANTED TO OFFER SOME INSIGHT IN REFERENCE TO THE COMMENT YOU REPEATED ABOUT, "WHERE WAS THE C.G. HELICOPTER WHEN THE TWO BOYS DROWNED". THE SHERIFFS OFFICE WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE COAST GUARD AND THEY WERE READY TO FLY AS SOON AS THE WINDS ALLOWED. IF YOU RECALL, THE WINDS WERE 40-50 MILES PER HOUR THAT NIGHT AND THE HELICOPTER IS LIMITED BY WEATHER CONDITIONS. IN MY 28 YEARS OF WORKING FOR THE SHERIFFS OFFICE, I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS INCIDENTS THAT REQUIRED THE SERVICE OF THE C. G. HELICOPTER OUT OF TRAVERSE CITY , MI. THE ONLY TIMES THAT THE CREW WOULD NOT FLY IMMEDIATELY WAS BECASUE OF WEATHER CONDITIONS OTHERWISE WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO RECIEVE IMMEDIATE RESPONSES FROM THEM. DO I WISH THERE WAS A C.G. STATION CLOSER WITH A HELICOTER, YOU BET. I KNOW THIS IS OFF THE ORIGINAL TOPIC BUT I DID WANT TO CLEAR UP THAT ISSUE. THANK YOU. LT. PAUL SCHREIBER. WINNEBAGO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE

Member Posts: 87 Location: Neenah, WI | I must correct myself. To guide on the Mississippi or Great Lakes, you're required to have a full OUPV license. The Limited OUPV is for inland only - Winnebago, Wolf, Lower Fox, Rock, Koshkonong & Sturgeon Bay shipping canal. Javelyn - thanks for the comments. It's nice to know the USCG is at least available if needed. Bill Edited by schmidtwi 4/20/2005 11:22 AM

Member Posts: 3899 | Congrats, Troy! Next off season, I will get my OUPV. I figure now that I'm up here, and the Bay is so close, I'm going to take advantage of it. A friend from Pewaukee got his in February, and it was a well run class for 10 days. If I can get the instructor to set up a class in Fondy, that would be ideal for me. I will post as things progress.

Once you take the (OUPV) test do you pay $250.00 to renew every year after? Or is it a flat few like your guides licenses. A message for Shep or others if you get something set up in Fond du Lac or close by could you send a note out or email me. [email protected] Thanks, Tony

Member Posts: 181 Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | Just completed getting my Limited 6 pack captains license. You will need to do many things every year such as staying certifed in first aid and CPR along with drug testing. Every 5 years you will need to renew by taking hearing, eye sight, physical etc... There are many tasks that you need to do besides passing the test. The Limited 6 pack Captain's Application is 15 pages. Besides the test and application you will need to have designated equipment for your boat if guiding. By the time this is done I will have shelled out around $700 to $800 (course, test, application, needed certifications, health exams, drug tests, equipment for boat etc..)
