Member Posts: 318 Location: Adell, WI | After fishing at Erie this year. I had a lot of different opinions on wether to use snaps, swivels or split rings. I almost always attach a snap to my crankbaits. What about you guys? I really didn't think much of it until know. I plan on checking the lure action with different combo's. | Hi dale I prefer tying wright to split ring but the problem with that is when it comes to changeing lures fast. The one thing you have to watch out for when tying directly to a split rig is line damage or your line slipping through the center of split ring. What you can do to prevent that is a little crazy glue or nail palish. When fishing for big fish like salmon or muskies. I will put a swivel on every split ring to avoid a snap comming undone and loseing a fish of a life time. BRY SETTELE

Member Posts: 299 Location: Wind lake, Wi | Dale- I have tried each way you mentioned and looked at how the crank reaction was with each method. Really I did not see to much diiference in action from one or the other. Using snap swivels the lure seemed to have a little bit more side to side wobble. I usually tie just to the split ring because I have had two line pop off the snap swivels before, and the knot would still be on the line with no crank or fish. There are some really good snap swiveles out on the market noe, I think I might give them a try. I always use these snaps when using blades. And if you ever have a problem with using blades (zips or silver buddies) and the hook hangs up on the blade itself, tie on a barrel swivel about a foot from the blade, this will help reduce twist and usually help with the hook not hanging up. Good fishing.

Member Posts: 215 | I always use a snap swivel when putting cranks on for trolling..when casting, I just tie right to the split ring. I haven't seen a difference in the action of the baits with or without the swivel and the swivel makes it much easier to change baits. Also, I run about a 5 foot leader behind a barrel swivel, then to the crank when trolling. Reduces line twist and catches a lot of stuff that runs down the line and could foul the bait.
