Subject: Waterfowl Zones

Just getting this out there even though this is a fishing site. Anyone that hunts in Wisconsin please take the time to look at the proposed zones and voice your opinion via email to WIDNR. This is very important to make the dicision based on the whole state and not just one or two groups pushing for their own season. I was at first for the new zones but looking at the greater good of all hunters I'm not sure. A couple things to remember is if we get 4 zones the split is gone which we need if we ever go down to 45 or 30 days. Also looking at the statistics from previous years the current framework and zones is about as good as you can get in the parameters set by feds. We can't open any early and most years close right at freeze up. Making later hunting closures for a small percentage of the hunting population that would benefit from it at the expense of the majority is not a good idea. Lastly most would be for adding a third zone either mich. or miss. while not changing anything for the rest of the state, but that’s not really fair to those who pushed for this on the other side of the state. Again please voice your opinions via email for the zones or going to the hearings in the coming weeks for general rules and dates as this is where your voice is heard. Also the above is just my opinion and no way pushing one way or another in fact I hunt mich. and the whole state right to the end and have emailed my opinion based on what I think would be best for all hunters in Wisconsin even though I would benefit mostly from a later michigan zone.

This my friend was voted on in april.. Which is why your link does not work.. this post can be removed.. And please inform who ever loaded you full of false info to stop spreading it.

It was a really dumb idea to screw up northern and southern zone and then add a bunch.. No one wanted that.. which is why is voted down.

THE PLAN, You won't be voting on, and shouldn't be, Since it does NOT affect current zones. The Congress meeting is on July 30th and the NRB votes on it August 10th. Even if you have done so already please contact the people listed below and tell them you want a LM season as long as no changes are made to north or south! Feel free to use any of them in your e-mails. Pass this on to all you know would like to be heard. If you have questions or concerns please contact me ASAP! And thank you for your help.

Need for a Third Duck Zone on Lake Michigan

• Current southern season dates already allow for hunting during peak migration times on the Mississippi River. They do not allow for hunting during peak migrations times on Lake Michigan.

• During a 60 day season format, the Lake Michigan zone would allow for Wisconsin duck hunting to be open for three months. Example: North Zone opens September 24th. Lake Michigan could open October 22nd and remain open until December 22nd. This would allow Wisconsin to have the longest season in the flyway!

• If 30 or 45 day seasons were to occur within the next five years (we all understand the low probability of this - as this year record pond counts are being taken and strong duck numbers remain) it would be near IMPOSSIBLE to link a season that catches the migrations for both the southern zone and Lake Michigan. Setting season dates during a shortened season to catch the migration for both the southern zone and the Mississippi River will be much easier.

• Data shows that season dates are already well set for the Mississippi River as much of the harvest already takes place there. While the data has not been captured, those of us hunting Lake Michigan for years are seeing first hand the increase in popularity of this style of hunting each year.

• Waterfowl surveys have shown that good duck numbers remain on the Mississippi River through November and into early December. Complete freeze-up usually occurs during the first full week in December. Some of the best diver hunting occurs during the deer gun season through the first week in December. Again, peak migration already coincides with open duck season on the Mississippi River.

• Waterfowlers on Lake Michigan end their season with good birds continually in the area, where those hunting inland or on the Mississippi River have already seen their season come to a close due to freeze-up or lack of birds.

• Launches up and down the lake remain open during December while nearly all other bodies of water are frozen. This allows for more hunter opportunity later into the year.

• We do agree on one point. The four zone system would be a loss and should not be considered.

To all the duckmen out there:

If this is the first you have heard of the proposed season changes, please become educated on all the possibilities they are proposing before taking sides on a lake michigan zone or a mississippi river zone. There has been heated discussions on the waterfowl boards for 10 months regarding this issue. Both sides have a personal reason to have there own zones. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line.
