| I've seen this lot's of times where you will be fishing on the ice when the fish will bite but not just for you but the person say a hundred or so ft to the left of you or another person a way of to the right or even behind you but it's fairly wide spread to widespread to be a school of fish, like within a few minutes four or five fish are caught you can really notice it when lots of peaple are on the ice, I have noticed this numerous times ,I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this wide spread biting, maybe the schools are just that big but I dought it. | |||

Member Posts: 744 | I fished a musky tournament last year where you had to bring your fish to the dock for measurement (time was also recorded). It was held on two lakes with half the field on each lake. It was amazing to see how many fish were caught in the same 45 minute time frame (2:00-2:45) on both lakes! Dave S

Bigdogg. I'm going to assume your talking about walleyes, as most other fish species do indeed school in tight proximity, travel together and group feed for the most part. And I've read and learned enough about walleyes, that I know they do often indeed segregate in sizes, but seldom travel in tight schools unless during spawning or (the rare) bait ball feeding. But that isn't saying they don't travel in free ranging groups, or gather in or travel to, places that keeps them in both comfort and an occassional meal. And certain environmental cues or baitfish movement during certain times (no matter what the reasons) will effect the aggressivness of the surronding fish in an area, or even on different parts of a lake often at the same time. | Yes I was talking about Walleyes, but after reading thumpers post (which is exactly what I'm refering to) I recall fishing for laketrout with downriggers and of course you have to read your depth closely on smaller lakes to avoid hanging up the downrigger ball, and for periods of time there will be very few fish on the fish finder but then like thumper said their will be lots of fish at the bottom 15 ft or so and this is over a large area, then you will catch or receive bites for a period of time. No dought these fish were just hanging on the bottom but then rose to feed, but the kicker is this just happens out of the blue without warning and at different times. It's just something I've noticed over the years but I guess thats fishing.
