My father and I have always wanted to go on a fishing trip together and we've finally decided that this is the year. We’re considering two options: 1) Lake of the Woods on the Ontario/Minnesota border and 2) north of Thunder Bay, Ontario going to a fly in lake. I am looking for advice on when and where to go that would have good consistent fishing for walleye and, if possible, trout. A few details: We are targeting August or September, would be coming from Madison, WI, and we're looking for a cabin rental that includes a boat. A fishing guide service in the area would also be helpful to us. The fish don’t need to be jumping into the boat, but we’d like consistent action.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Go to Lake of the Woods MN. We have been there several times in the timeframe you have, and the walleye fishing is unreal. Check out http://lakeofthewoodsmn.com/?cbg_tz=360. All the resorts offer guide services. Any questions at all, email me at [email protected].

Ditto on LOTW out of the Baudette area.

Also, there is some phenomenal reef fishing out of Kenora in August and Sept, on LOTW. Jig and a crawler or leech on 25- 30 foot humps is a lot of fun. I used to know a guy up there, but have been out of touch for many years. There's some good guides up that way. Great scenery, and great fishing.

For many years, I got invited to a group trip up on the English River Chain just northwest of Kenora. Separation Lake Lodge. We took our boats, did the american plan with a grocery stop in kenora prior. It was fun. Good fishing.

Walleyes on plain lead head and 3 inch chartruese curly grubs. Jig any rock that is 10 feet or longer on the shore. Some rocks better than others. Get closer to the river and cast the old mepps 5 o diamonds for pike.

Nice though. Every boy should fish with their dad.....
