Member Posts: 145 | At a weigh-in with the suspense of an Alfred Hitchcock movie, Ted Takasaki couldn't come up with enough weight to edge Wayne Butz out of the lead. Ted could only manage 13#, while Butz came through with a bag weighing 28# to take first place and a check for $85,000. Waynes partner, Chad Wertepny edged out Flo Swank to win the Co-Angler first prize and a check for $15,000. While the lead changed hands in both divisions as the weigh-in went on, Ken Schoenecker walked off the stage the moment that he saw what Butz was carrying. Even more surprising, was the way Butz came to win the tourney. While spinners had been the mainstay, and the only technique mentioned during the entire 4 days of competition, Butz confessed that some of his biggest fish today, and some of his best fish during the week came jigging a yellow jig with a piece of crawler in 7-9 feet of water on various pieces of structure. That change in technique, and untouched water, gave up the fish that Wayne needed to get to the top of the leader board. Tom Keenan finished 9th, but took home The Angler of The Year title. Let me say that I enjoyed covering my first tournament, and to the Pros that took the time to take me on the side and say "Thanks" for the coverage and writing, believe me, it was my pleasure to meet you, to talk with you, and to be able to call you my friends.
