| I'm looking to purchase a used walleye rig this year and would like some input of pros and cons of these motors. I've heard of alot of problems with the earlier opti's and was wondering if I'd be better off with a EFI model. Was it just the 225 Opti's with the problems or are there more?Any input on these motors would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

| I believe the Optimax after 2004 were pretty solid, before that I would stay away.
The EFI is decent engine, supposedly rock solid, just not as fuel efficient. I bought and EFI a few years ago, and got a lemon and two blown powerheads. Now I just purchased a 225 Etec HO, I wanted to try something different. |

| The bigg Optimax had some issues in the 2000-2001 models. Since 2002, the issues have been resolved, and they are great motors. I have a 200 Opti on my new Tuffy.
The EFI's were virtually bulletproof, but as mentioned, they do use more fuel than the Opti's. |

Location: Appleton wi | Both EFI and optimax are good engines. I had 225 EFI for 3.5 years and had one technical issue that was a couple hundred doller fix. Which i feel is pretty good for amount of time i used it and on the water . The EFi is a gas and oil hog.My new boat has a 225 optimax and there is huge difference on gas cost! The anti merc guys wanna continue to bring up blown power heads issues that have long been taken care of. Last summer i met a guy at a launch who was running an older optimax and he purchased this boat used and the motor was 2001 and his power head blew. So i guess there may be more older optimax out there that never had there power heads replaced that may need it. A good question to ask when your looking at buying a used boat with merc on them! |

| Have a 98-99 135 Mariner Opti, cheap to run and no problems since purchase of the boat in 2001. |
