I am looking at buying a new cable steer bow mount trolling motor, what are your experiences with the motors available? Reasons why? MotorGuide Tour Series? Minn Kota Fortrex? Minn Kota Maxxum Pro?

Thanks in advance,

Mike,

Spend the extra money and get an autopilot. I had a 36 volt MK for 3 years and found it almost impossible to steer. I currently have a 24 volt MK w/autopilot and I use it for crawler harnesses all summer long.

Mike go to walleye101 and ask Lance about them.it all depends on what you are going to use it for over here it the detroit river its the cable steer because it has no delay when it comes to boat control for vertical jigging many choices out there

I currently have an Autopilot, I do not like it for fishing rivers or working shorelines. I have had a cable drive motor 18 of the past 20 years and found them more response and easier to steer in those situations.

My currnet unit is a MK autopilot. I do like some of its features, but if you fish rivers, expecially ones with heavy current, the autopilot is way tooooo slooooowww.
I am removing it and replacing it with a cable this season. from a commercial I saw with Lindner, it appears that the Fortrex with hold position and not spin as some have in the past.
Take care,
Jim O

If you like to troll, get a bag of potato chips and a autopilot. If you do anything other then trolling the cable is definitely the way to go. You can use the maxxum to troll by locking the tension screw and using the big motor as a rudder. This is not nearly as nice as the autopilot for trolling but it can be done.

Instant response of the cable is one good thing but knowing which way the motor is pointing without having to look at it is priceless.
