Member Posts: 885 | One of my first trips on Little Bay de Noc found me, Mike and Tom trolling for Walleyes along the north shore in 25 feet of water. It was early in my renewed interest in Walleye fishing and I was excited to just be out in a boat again with 2 friends in search of the "monster Bay de Noc walleyes" I had heard about. The sun was shining and the I remember remarking to myself how clean the water was. We still had not figured out how to catch fish during the daylight hours and every hour spent in the light of day seemed to bring no results. As I sat in the boat with my 2 friends and listened to stories of their success from recent years past, I wondered just how long it would take till the "big one" hit. After hours with no action, we finally got a hit and it was a big one. I recall the board shooting back and the excitement that followed. It was Toms turn so he took the rod and began to reel in the "big one”, after a short battle, Mike removed the board and I stood ready with the net as Tom continued to do battle. As the big one got closer to the back of the boat, it dove from side to side refusing to come to the net. As I leaned over the back of the boat, I noticed 4 feet down was a cement filled paint can attached to a rope. I turned to the guys and yelled "it's an anchor", Tom still engages in the battle… thought I was describing the fish he had on as an anchor. He responded with delight thinking he had on a monster Walleye. I said again, "It’s an anchor" and again he told me to net the fish. As I netted the paint can filled with cement, we all had a good laugh. For many years, that experience has brought tears of laughter, but today it brings me much sorrow. My friend Tom, passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer. Tom, I will always remember you and your family in my prayers and the "big one" we put in the boat on that beautiful sunny day on the Bay!
