I need help- I bought a Humminbird for the first time and mounted as a trolling motor depth finder. I can not get rid of feedback when the motor is on (range 1-8, it does not appear at range 9 and 10)- I have wired to the following 1)trolling motor batteries, 2) the cranking battery, 3)double grounded it when attached to both 1) and 2), 3) hooked up to the independent 12V battery from my ice fishing Zercom, finally 4) removed the transducer from the prop section of the motor-all with no help. The only common thread is that the cable for the transducer is fastened to the shaft of the motor. Last resort will be to insulate the cable. Anyone had this happen or have any suggestions? (PS- I have also had two conversations with their tech center)

Steve Worrall had a post some time ago, describing a grounding procedure for the TM that helped reduce/eliminate interference. It may have been on MuskieFIRST. I will see if I can find the link. What kind of TM do you have?

Try this:

Run a ground wire from the negative pole of the battery you have the sonar wired to to a ground on the starting battery OR ground on the boat. Just a light guage wire will do. If you have an aluminum boat, you could try grounding the battery to the boat. Be sure the positive poles and leads are protected from incidental contact. Let me know if this helps, if not, I will get you to step two.

Thanks for the idea- but I had it hooked up to a seperate, non boat integrated, 12V battery and it still had interference. I assumed that ruled out the grounding issue- correct or no? I ended up just taking the unit back and got a Lowrance- hooked it up and worked fine yesterday ( although I did get some feedback once I got over 10 feet of water- shallower, no feedback at all- any ideas on that one?). I think it has something to do with the fact that the Humminbird unit works on a dual frequency (20 and 60 degree) when it is on?! My last straw was insulating the cable and then mounting the transducer on 3/4" of rubber. When I held the transducer away from the trolling motor, I had no interference, when I attached it , I had interference again. I just got tired of it and so did an exchange! I am interested in what step two would have been, however! Thanks again

Step two would have been a trip to Radio Shack for an in line RF interference filter. The ground probably would have done the trick but your fix is a better decision, I think.
