To late to help you but as the water dropped steadily over the last 4 days the walleye have made a big move from big running sloughs to the channel... some of them never left the channel... but larger concentrations were in the running sloughs. Lots of fish in Bad axe area.
One location gave up 31" 28" 26" in 2 days and a bunch from 18"s up.

Went out in the slews by Harpers Ferry Friday 05-30. We did pretty well. The mayfly hatch was just starting in the morning. We caught about 20 walleyes all day. We kept 7 walleyes (15-21in) and a nice sauger. All walleyes were caught trolling crank baits. They seemed to be laying in the 10-12 fow range. Water was really clear. You could see about 3 feet down. Bass and bluegills were jumping all over feeding on mayflies.

Iam a prairie duchien resident, have been fishing on the mississippi and wisconsin rivers all my life mainly for pan fish and whatever I could catch from the bank. I have always heard about the fish are biting on the wing dams but no one can or will tell ya how to find these wing dams. my question to you is how do you go about finding these wing dams, between pdc and pool 9, my brother is coming down from appleton area(lake winnebago} and we want to go out and find some nice walley which are supposed to be biting on the wing dams?thank you for your time

Todd,

The wings dams are easy to find. They are located near the main river channel. There are closing dams and such located away from the main channel and in back waters that can be good as well. The wing dams on the main channel are usually well marked with a "can" at the tip of the wing dam in the main river channel. Another way to find wing dams and closing dams is to find nautical charts for the river. You can get 'em on line or from the DNR or Army corp.

Typical presentations are to anchor on the upstream side and pitch jigs to the front face, or fish live bait. Some will even troll the front face with live bait or artificials.

Keep in mind not all wing dams are the same and some are better than others. Good luck

PS. Becareful when investigating wing dams, some come right near the surface of the water and like to "eat" props.

Todd,

Most wing dams are marked with either a green or red buoy. A wing dam is simply a wall of rock extending from shore to redirect current towards the middle of the channel. You can find them by watching for major changes in the water. You will see a straight line of ripples protruding from shore towards the channel.

You can anchor above them about 50 yards and cast in front of them. Right now your best bet would be to try to fish the very outmost tip of them as the water is pretty low. The lower the current, the farther out on the dam the fish should be.

Keep in mind, that not every dam will hold fish at all times. Finding which ones hold fish can take some time and patience, but once you figure it out, you may have a dam that you can fish all your life. Good luck.

P.S. DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE OVER THE TOP OF WING DAMS WHEN THE WATER IS THIS LOW!!! DOING THIS WILL ALMOST GAURANTEE TAKING YOUR BOAT INTO THE REPAIR SHOP FOR LOWER END DAMAGE.
